The main objective of this study is to analyse, in empirical terms, the difference between workaholism and work engagement, through the study of its relations with the well-being – with Portuguese teachers. Based on a study done in Japan by Shimazu and Schaufeli (2009), we expected to find a positive relation between workaholism and illness (high level of psychosomatic problems, low level of satisfaction with life and low level of work commitment), and work engagement with well-being (few complains of psychosomatic problems, high level of satisfaction with life and work commitment). To gather the data, we have used the same study scale that has been mentioned above, ie, DUWAS (to evaluate workaholism), UWES (for work engagement) and part of HPQ (to evaluate the satisfaction and commitment), exception made to BYSQ, that has been substituted by QES, to evaluate the psychosomatic complains. We used the system of Structural Equation Modeling and tested the teoric model based on the literature and specially the study of Shimatzu and Schaufeli (2009). Despite the good adjustment levels in our model, only one hypothesis has been confirmed: there was a strong and positive relation between work engagement and work commitment. The other relations that have been considered in this study did not present significative differences, with the exception of the relation between work engagement and satisfaction, however this satisfaction was presented as negative. Our results were different from those mentioned in the bibliography and suggest the need of more investigation in this scope. In fact, the extent of the constructs that we have measured in our study is very big and embraces different theories and models. Some limitations, pratical implications and clues for further investigations will be discussed.
