O bem-estar subjectivo na terceira idade: estudo comparativo entre idosos institucionalizados e idosos não institucionalizados do concelho de Carregal do Sal

Abstract

O envelhecimento demográfico e a reestruturação social e familiar assumem-se como os factores que impulsionaram as preocupações manifestadas sobre o envelhecimento e as suas consequências. O aumento da taxa de dependência dos nossos idosos criou a necessidade de existirem redes sociais de apoio bem como de instituições de acolhimento a idosos, a fim de evitar o isolamento, a solidão e o aparecimento de incapacidades precoces, promovendo-se o bem-estar das pessoas em idade adulta avançada. O presente trabalho tem como principal objectivo estudar, comparativamente, o bem-estar subjectivo de idosos que residem nas suas próprias casas e de idosos que estão institucionalizados, analisando, sobretudo, a forma como estes avaliam a sua própria vida e como se sentem perante a mesma. A amostra desta investigação é constituída por 60 idosos do Concelho de Carregal do Sal, 30 institucionalizados e 30 não institucionalizados, sendo que a sua maior parte é constituída por indivíduos do sexo feminino e com idade superior a 74 anos, sendo na sua maioria viúvos e apresentando uma escolaridade muito heterogénea. Os idosos responderam primeiramente a um breve questionário sócio-demográfico e, de seguida, foi aplicada a Escala de Satisfação com a Vida – SWLS (Satisfaction With life scale), e a Escala de Afectividade Positiva e Negativa – PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule) para estudar, então, as dimensões do Bem-estar Subjectivo. De acordo com os resultados apurados, os participantes neste estudo mostram-se igualmente satisfeitos com a vida e apresentam um nível positivo de bem-estar subjectivo, independentemente de estarem institucionalizados ou não institucionalizados.

The demographic aging and the social and family reorganization appear as the factors that boosted the concerns about aging and its consequences. The increase in the rate of dependency of our elderly people has created the need of supporting social networks as well as foster care organizations for elderly people in order to avoid isolation, loneliness and the surfacing of early disabilities, promoting the well-being of elderly people. The main goal of this work is to study, comparatively, the subjective well-being of the non-institutionalized elderly people versus the institutionalized ones, mainly analyzing the way they perceive their own life as well as the way they feel about it. This study's sample consists in 60 elderly people from the town hall of Carregal do Sal, 30 institutionalized and 30 non-institutionalized, whereas most are female, over 74 years old, widows, with various levels of education. First, the subjects answered a brief social-demographic questionnaire followed by the Satisfaction With Life Scale – SWLS and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule – PANAS, in order to study the dimensions of the subjective well-being. The results show that the participants of this study are equally satisfied with life and show a positive level of subjective well-being both in the institutionalized and non-institutionalized cases.
