Reading is an instrument to acquire knowledge, a way to communicate, to share information, feelings and values, and, it is, undoubtedly, agent and promoter of human development. The initiation to reading is a complex process that demands from the teacher an appropriate approach. To make the teaching/learning process effective, it is fundamental to know the different methods of teaching how to read and also to know the cognitive and linguistic processes that are involved in it. On the Revision of Literature, after approaching some concepts as: “What’s Reading?, we focus on the way the learning of the reading skills by children happens, on the importance of the Phonological Awareness to make this learning successful and on the most used methods to promote the initiation to reading. We start the second part of our study with a global analysis of the Portuguese Language Official Syllabus and some Curricular Orientations that are part of the National Syllabus of the Basic Education. We quote excerpts from the regulating documents of the Portuguese education system, the procedures, structures and objectives that determine the skills of a student from the 1st Cycle, stressing the orientations in relation to a student of the 1st grade. Being one of objectives of our study to understand the relation of the teacher with the PLOS (Portuguese Language Official Syllabus), its interpretation and use in the teaching process, we also wish to contribute to the clarification of other objectives proposed along our study. In the second part of the empirical study, we intend not only to find out which knowledge the teachers of the 1st Cycle have of the Portuguese Language Official Syllabus and of its institutional orientations, but also which methods they use in the initiation to reading in their professional life. It is also researched about the reasons underlying the choice of a certain method and about their feelings in relation to initial and continuing training. The study follows a qualitative methodology using surveys to accomplish its objectives. The conclusion reached show that the teachers, in spite of recognizing that they have approached both theoretically and in practice the methods of the initiation to reading in their initial training, do not consider that training as a decisive factor in their methodological choice. This choice has more to do with other factors, such as their own learning experiences, their pedagogical practices, their continuing and post-graduated training or even the influence of the place where their school is located. In this reflection we intend to help clarifying which processes and educative practices can contribute more effectively to the success of learning the reading skills.
