As termas dos Cássios em Lisboa: ficção ou realidade?

Causara estranheza o facto de a inscrição CIL II 191 ter sido indicada como originariamente “pintada numa telha”, dada a grande importância do seu conteúdo, pois circunstanciadamente referia quando e por quem haviam sido reconstruídas as chamadas “termas dos Cássios” de Lisboa. Essa expressão chegou a ser interpretada como indicativa de que se estava perante a minuta da epígrafe, que se imaginava monumental. Uma análise dos testemunhos em que Emílio Hübner se baseara e nos manuscritos anteriores possibilitou a aparente ‘redenção’ do texto: ele constara, de facto, pintado, mas na parede interior de um dos compartimentos das termas, acompanhado de outros elementos decorativos do maior interesse para se ajuizar da riqueza monumental do conjunto. A epígrafe não é, pois, uma invenção: foi uma realidade bem palpável

It was odd that the inscription CIL II 191 was indicated as having been “painted on a tile”, given the great importance of its text, since it referred to when and who reconstructed the so-called “Cassii’s thermal baths” in Lisbon. This expression was interpreted as indicating that the inscription was a minute of a larger epigraphic record, surely of monumental dimensions. An analysis of the documents on which Emil Hübner based his conclusions and of the previous manuscripts made possible an apparent “redemption” of the text: it was, indeed, painted, but on the interior wall of one of the compartments of the thermal baths, accompanied by other decorative elements of greatest interest in order to ascertain the monumental riches of the all building. Therefore, this epigraphic record is not an invention: it was a very concrete reality
