Abstract

Nem sempre nos lembramos de que a imprensa não começou com Gutenberg: no Extremo-Oriente, as invenções do papel, dos blocos de impressão e dos tipos móveis foram etapas importantes de uma outra história da impressão e dos livros. Uma história que não só começou séculos antes da nossa como ainda continua. Em oficinas artesanais, por toda a China, ainda hoje se produzem alguns milhões de xilografias por ano: gravuras de Ano Novo (nianhua), amuletos (fu) e papéis para queimar aos deuses e aos mortos (zhima). Estas xilografias populares inserem-se num campo particular da cultura chinesa a que chamo o mundo do hua por oposição ao mundo do shu, aquele mundo da cultura erudita a que nós mais facilmente chamamos chinesa

We all know, but sometimes tend to forget, that printing did not started with Gutenberg in Europe: in the Far-East the inventions of paper, block printing and movable type were major steps of an all different history of printing and books. An history so amazing for us Europeans that not only started centuries earlier, but is still going on: today, popular printshops in China produce manually a few million xylographic New Year prints (nianhua) paper horses (zhima) and charms (fu) every year. These popular prints belong to one particular kind of Chinese culture I call the hua world, and that totally opposes the shu world, the world of the literary culture, the one that in Europe we usually call Chinese
