A representação material da violência contra as mulheres negras na obra de Conceição Evaristo

Abstract

This thesis aims to study Conceição Evaristo's literary work, intending to elucidate the discursive processes which shape the material representation of violence - gender, race and class - suffered by Afro-Brazilian women on a daily basis. The concepts of peripheral and Afro-Brazilian literature are analyzed and the concept of race is problematized as a framework of this study, since the research allowed me to understand that the skin of those who write greatly influences the recognition of a work, whether literary or not. Furthermore, a brief history of women's education is presented to show the past and present difficulties of Afro-Brazilians to gain space in the field of literary art. The intersectionality of violence is also problematized, highlighting discriminations that intertwine in such a way that make black women experience situations of discrimination, not visible due to the discriminatory social structure. The study of Conceição Evaristo's work reveals this intersectionality and also demonstrates how “writeness” – a defining concept of her writing and proposed by herself – was constituted as a practice to materialize memory and violence. To prove this, the discursive forms of “writing” are analyzed, with emphasis on orality, pointing them out as a disobedient “language” strategy for desubalternization. The dissertation is structured into three parts: "Marginal/peripheral literature", "The representation of the materiality of violence against black women in Evaristo’s work" and "From the materiality of voice to the materiality of writing: Conceição Evaristo's desobedient language."

Este trabalho propõe-se estudar a obra de Conceição Evaristo, pretendendo elucidar os processos discursivos utilizados para construir a representação material da violência - de género, raça e classe -, sofrida pelas mulheres afro-brasileiras quotidianamente. Como enquadramento desse estudo, são analisados os conceitos de literatura periférica e afrobrasileira e é problematizado o conceito de raça, uma vez que a investigação me permitiu compreender que, a pele de quem escreve, em muito influencia o reconhecimento de uma obra, como sendo literária ou não. Além disso, apresenta-se um breve percurso da educação das mulheres, para mostrar o quão foi e é difícil, para as afro-brasileiras, conquistaremespaço no âmbito da arte literária. É problematizada, também, a interseccionalidade da violência, destacando discriminações que se imbricam de tal modo que fazem as mulheres negras vivenciarem situações de discriminação, não visíveis pela estrutura social discriminatória. O estudo da obra de Conceição Evaristo revela esta interseccionalidade e mostra, ainda, de que modo a “escrevivência” - conceito definidor da sua escrita e proposto por ela mesma - se constituiu enquanto prática de materialização da memória e da violência. Para o comprovar, analisam-se as formas discursivas da “escrevivência”, com destaque para a oralidade, apontando-as como estratégia de “linguajamento” desobediente para a dessubalternização. A tese divide-se em três partes: "Literatura marginal/periférica"; "A representação da materialidade da violência sobre as mulheres negras na obra de Evaristo"; e "Da materialidade da voz à materialidade da escrita: a língua desobediente de Conceição Evaristo".
