Coimbra: universidade e cidade como manta de retalhos

Abstract

A integração da universidade na cidade foi um objetivo orientador no planeamento dos novos espaços de Ensino Superior em Portugal, na década de 70. Na metodologia de análise sintática espacial a integração é uma medida normalizada de distância de qualquer espaço de origem a todos os outros de um sistema. Calcula quão próximo está o espaço de origem de todos os outros espaços e a sua importância destaca-se por potenciar a orientação, a co-presença, a segurança e o encontro - fatores desejáveis em ambientes urbanos e que, na relação universidade e cidade, podem ser determinantes na produção de conhecimento. Nas últimas três décadas, apesar deste propósito, observou-se que os Pólos universitários da Universidade de Coimbra comportam-se como espaços segregados física e socialmente. O objetivo deste trabalho é medir a integração de cada um dos Pólos universitários na cidade de Coimbra através da análise espacial sintática, correlacionar com os dados quantitativos e qualitativos obtidos na realização de um inquérito sobre o uso do espaço aos alunos do ano letivo 2015/2016 e verificar se existe uma correlação entre os valores da integração e a altimetria através da justaposição do mapa de integração da configuração espacial de Coimbra com a planta topográfica da cidade.Os resultados sugerem que a Universidade de Coimbra, representada pelos Pólos universitários, encontra-se segregada em relação à cidade e que a topografia acidentada da cidade se constitui um fator no condicionamento da configuração espacial urbana, predizendo o desenvolvimento segregado da universidade e cidade.

The integration of the university into the city was a guiding objective in the planning of new Higher Education spaces in Portugal in the 1970s. In the methodology of spatial syntactic analysis integration is a normalized measure of distance from any source space to all others in a system. It calculates how close the origin space is to all other spaces, and its importance stands out by reinforcing orientation, co-presence, safety and encounter, desirable factors in urban environments that, in the university-city relationship, can be determinant in the production of knowledge. In the last three decades, despite this objective, it has been observed that the university poles of the University of Coimbra behave as physically and socially segregated spaces. The aim of this work is to measure the integration of each of the university poles of the city of Coimbra through syntactic spatial analysis, correlate it with quantitative and qualitative data obtained in a survey on the use of space by students in the academic year 2015/2016, and verify whether there is a correlation between the values of integration and altimetry by overlaying the integration map of the spatial configuration of Coimbra with the topographic plan of the city.The results suggest that the University of Coimbra, represented by the university poles, is segregated in relation to the city and that the rugged topography of the city constitutes a factor in conditioning the urban spatial configuration that predicts the segregated development of the university and the city.
