Abstract

The pharmaceutical industry faces complex and ever-evolving challenges that demand agile and flexible approaches to meet the demands of the global market. This dissertation investigates the application of Agile methodologies in the Pharmaceutical Industry, exploring the principles of Agile and its variations such as Scrum and Kanban, as well as comparing them to the traditional Waterfall model. Furthermore, it will examine how Agile has been successfully implemented in other sectors and the opportunities it presents along the pharmaceutical industry's value chain. With a specific focus on the unique challenges that this sector faces, its intrinsic characteristics will be analyzed, along with strategies to overcome these obstacles in the adoption of Agile. To illustrate the practical application of this methodology, this dissertation includes a detailed case study on the use of Agile during the COVID-19 pandemic in the vaccine development process. Finally, the benefits of implementing Agile in the Pharmaceutical Industry will be highlighted, and the limitations and challenges that organizations may encounter in this process will be discussed. This dissertation offers a comprehensive view of Agile methodologies and their relevance in the Pharmaceutical Industry, providing insights for professionals and industry leaders looking to enhance their agility and responsiveness.

A indústria farmacêutica enfrenta desafios complexos e em constante evolução, que exigem abordagens ágeis e flexíveis para responder às exigências do mercado global. Esta monografia investiga a aplicação das metodologias Agile na Indústria Farmacêutica, explorando os princípios do Agile e as suas variações como o Scrum e Kanban, bem como compará-las ao modelo tradicional Waterfall. Para além disso, será analisado como o Agile tem sido implementado com sucesso noutros setores e as oportunidades que ele apresenta ao longo da cadeia de valor da Indústria Farmacêutica. Com foco específico nos desafios exclusivos que este setor enfrenta, serão analisadas as suas características intrínsecas e estratégias para superar esses obstáculos na adoção do Agile. Para ilustração da aplicação prática desta metodologia, esta dissertação inclui um caso de estudo detalhado sobre a utilização do Agile durante a pandemia COVID-19 no processo de desenvolvimento de vacinas. Por fim, serão destacados os benefícios da implementação do Agile na Indústria Farmacêutica e discutidas as limitações e desafios que as organizações podem enfrentar nesse processo. Esta dissertação oferece uma visão abrangente das metodologias Agile e a sua relevância na Indústria Farmacêutica, fornecendo perspetivas para os profissionais e líderes do setor que procuram melhorar a sua agilidade e capacidade de resposta.
