In this paper, I intend to point out the particular way in which the filmmaker Patricio Guzmán evokes the memory of the trauma of the Chilean dicta- torship in his documentary The Pearl Button (2015), the central film of the trilogy that begins with Nostalgia for the Light (2010) and ends with The Cordillera of Dreams (2019). In this way, I explore how his cinema increasingly found aesthetic and narrative strategies to picture the unseen, as one of his books’ titles suggests. Among these strategies, is the immersion in the landscape, which leads to the gui- ding question of this research: can the aesthetic experience of immersion in the cinematic landscape actively contribute to memory reconstruction? Moreover, which narrative devices and mode of representation does the director use in his film, where absence is the central theme? |
