Tradução e (in)visibilidade do tradutor: Será traduzir um ato político?

Abstract

This paper is a proposal for a translation from German into Portuguese of an excerpt from Dieter Duhm's Terra Nova: Globale Revolution und Heilung der Liebe, using the French translation Terra Nova: Revolution globale et guérison de l'amour as an aid. As this is a socio-anthropological text with a very strong political slant, it raises a number of highly pertinent issues in the field of translation that call for a rigorous and in-depth analysis of the foundations of the task of translation itself, the role of the translator and the impact of their work on a cultural, social, political and linguistic level. It starts from a more technical and methodological analysis of translation to arrive at the role of the translator as an agent who contributes to transforming the world they inhabit. An attempt is also made to study the intricacies of the functionalist approach and its practical application, with a special focus on Christiane Nord's principle of loyalty and her textual analysis methodology. The focus is on the text, the author's voice and the difficulties and challenges that a socio-anthropological text, written by a politically and spiritually committed leader, can pose to the translator.Given the proselytising embedded in the Terra Nova text, the translation task involved an arduous path of decision-making, all of which was made on the basis of Nord's principle of loyalty. The translator's immanent awareness of his or her own biases, cultural roots, ideological presuppositions and socio-political positioning is an indispensable quality of the translation process. Translating is therefore the act of taking on a responsibility in the act of creating realisable utopias, of giving voice to the possible that doesn't yet exist, the act of nurturing certain realities, means of communication and reinforcing specific sources of knowledge and information, while always being aware of their impact on the current socio-political framework. The translator's visibility is, as a general rule, an essential element in achieving a quality translation, as it means good cultural mediation and, therefore, simultaneous respect for the two cultures at play, as well as respect for the reader and their ability to open up to new horizons and knowledge. In turn, the translator's immanent awareness of their own biases, cultural roots, ideological presuppositions and socio-political positioning is an essential quality in the translation process. It is therefore vitally important for translators to get to know themselves as readers and as part of a socio-political whole, as part of an information circuit that contributes to the dynamic development of that whole, as well as getting to know the environment in which they live and work. These are the fundamental criteria that must be met before any translation work begins.

O presente trabalho consiste numa proposta de tradução de alemão para português de um excerto da obra Terra Nova: Globale Revolution und Heilung der Liebe de Dieter Duhm, recorrendo à tradução francesa Terra Nova: Revolution globale et guérison de l’amour como auxílio. Por se tratar de um texto socioantropológico, com um cariz político bastante acentuado, surgem várias questões de grande pertinência no âmbito da tradução que suscitam uma análise rigorosa e aprofundada sobre os fundamentos da própria tarefa de traduzir, do papel do tradutor e do impacto do seu trabalho a nível cultural, social, político e linguístico. Parte-se de uma análise mais técnica e metodológica da tradução para se chegar ao papel do tradutor como agente que contribuiu para transformar o mundo que habita. Procura-se também estudar os meandros da abordagem funcionalista e sua aplicação prática, dando-se especial foco ao princípio de lealdade de Christiane Nord e à sua metodologia de análise textual. Foca-se o texto, a voz do autor e dirimem-se as dificuldades e desafios que um texto sócio-antropológico, escrito por um líder político e espiritualmente comprometido, pode propor ao tradutor.Dado o proselitismo embutido no texto Terra Nova, a tarefa tradutiva implicou um caminho árduo de tomada de decisões, todas elas feitas com base no princípio de lealdade de Nord. A consciência imanente do tradutor face aos seus próprios vieses, raízes culturais, pressupostos ideológicos e posicionamento sociopolítico é uma qualidade imprescindível ao processo de tradução. Traduzir é, pois, o ato de assumir uma responsabilidade no ato de criar utopias concretizáveis, de dar voz ao possível que ainda não existe, ao ato de alimentar determinadas realidades, vias de comunicação e reforçar fontes de conhecimento e informação específicas, tendo sempre consciência do seu impacto no enquadramento sociopolítico atual.A visibilidade do tradutor é, regra geral, um elemento imprescindível para se obter uma tradução de qualidade, já que significa uma boa mediação cultural e, por isso, respeito simultâneo pelas duas culturas em jogo, assim como um respeito pelo leitor e a sua capacidade de abertura a novos horizontes e conhecimentos. Por sua vez, a consciência imanente do tradutor face aos seus próprios vieses, raízes culturais, pressupostos ideológicos e posicionamento sociopolítico é uma qualidade imprescindível ao processo de tradução. É, portanto, de uma importância vital que o tradutor procure conhecer-se a si mesmo, enquanto leitor e enquanto parte de um todo sociopolítico, de um circuito informacional que contribui para o desenvolvimento dinâmico desse todo, assim como procurar conhecer esse ambiente onde habita e trabalha. Estes são os critérios fundamentais a apurar antes do início de qualquer trabalho de tradução.
