dc.description | Dissertação de Mestrado em Tradução apresentada à Faculdade de Letras | - |
dc.description.abstract | This dissertation is about the translation of children's literature, which means literature written specifically for or considered appropriated for children and young adults. This is a relatively recent field in Translation Studies, due to its peripheral position in the literary polysystem.Since there is scarce information on the acceptance of foreign elements on children’s literature by children and young adults, a survey was conducted among people aged 10 to 17, whose first language was Portuguese, to identify the traits and preferences of the target audience of children’s literature in Portugal. The results show that most respondents, specially teenagers, prefer foreignization regarding the translation of children’s literature.Simultaneously, a comparison was made between translations of «Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone» in European Portuguese by Isabel Fraga, in Brazilian Portuguese by Lia Wyler, and in neutral Spanish by Alicia Dellepiane, regarding the translation of proper names and cultural references, based on the typologies of Hermans (1988) and Davies (2003), respectively. The aim of this comparison is to demonstrate the diversity of procedures that can be applied to solve a problem and to find out what strategy was used by the translators based on those procedures. In this way, it was possible to conduct a general study based on the collected data and a contrastive analysis of a children's book to assess contemporary translation trends, strategies, and practices. | eng |
