O Fantasma Transgeracional (e Transmedial) em e para além de Wuthering Heights

Abstract

Wuthering Heights is a literary work that’s been the subject of a lot of study, having already a considerable canon of works around it. Based on those studies, this dissertation will analyse the concepts of “trauma” and “trangenerational transference” under the light of the themes and contentes of Emily Brontë’s magnum opus. Having in consideration the life experiences of the 19th century english author, we will develop, in the first chapter, a critical and conceptual analysis based on the author’s biography, connecting it back to the development of Wuthering Heights. Accounting for style and epoch the author lived in, the biography we will comb over will touch important phases of Emily Brontë’s life and certain details reflected in her work, such as, for exemple, the physical space in which the novel inserts itself, and the time where the action occurs – ergo, the english countryside, around the 19th century. Through this, we will take notice of some of the ghost that haunted Brontë’s life and made their way into her literary work.After analysing the concepts of “trauma” and “transgenerational transference” in the second chapter, we will, in the subsequente third, unravel the scroll of works that were inspired by and ended up representing the ghost of Wuthering Heights. Firstly, we will analyse the works of art of Edna Clark Hall, and her personal criative obsession with the study of Wuthering Heights. We’ll consider, secondly, the poetic texts of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, and the dialogue therein. Thirdly, and lastly, we’ll study the musical poetry of Kate Bush, which recounts, in particular exemple, the obsessive passion and love/hatred between Heathcliff and Catherine. Harkening back to exemples of literary and artistic value, all of them either titled after and/or inspired by Wuthering Heights, we’ll suggest that the literary work of Wuthering Heights itself functions as a transgenerational, transmedial ghost, a carrier of symbols that have haunted and inspired many of its readers through the ages since its publication.

Wuthering Heights é uma obra literária já muito estudada, tendo sido já desenvolvido um vasto cânone de estudos sobre a mesma. Com base nesses estudos, esta dissertação analisará conceitos como “trauma” e “transferência transgeracional” à luz dos temas e conteúdos da obra-prima de Emily Brontë.Tendo em consideração as vivências e a experiência da autora inglesa do século XIX, será desenvolvida, num primeiro capítulo, uma análise crítica a partir da biografia da autora, mencionando-se esta biografia com o processo e o desenvolvimento da produção da obra Wuthering Heights. Atendendo ao estilo e à época em que a autora vivia, a biografia contará com fases marcantes da vida de Emily Brontë e certos pormenores refletidos na sua obra, tais como o espaço em que a narrativa se insere e o tempo em que a ação decorre – ergo, os montes rurais ingleses do século XIX. Ficaremos, assim, a conhecer alguns dos fantasmas que assombraram a vida da autora e que foram marcantes na sua obra.Após a análise dos conceitos de “trauma” e “transferência transgeracional” no segundo capítulo, num terceiro capítulo desenrolar-se-á o pergaminho do conjunto de textos representativos do fantasma de Wuthering Heights. Num primeiro momento, serão analisadas as obras de arte, produzidas por Edna Clarke Hall e a sua obsessão criativa pessoal com o estudo da obra de Wuthering Heights. Serão considerados, num segundo momento, os textos poéticos de Ted Hughes e Sylvia Plath, e o diálogo entre eles. E, por último, será estudada a poesia musical de Kate Bush, que reconta, num exemplo particular, a paixão obsessiva e a relação de amor/ódio entre Heathcliff e Catherine. Recorrendo a estes exemplos de valor literário e artístico, todos intitulados a partir de, e inspirados por, Wuthering Heights, iremos sugerir que a própria obra de Wuthering Heights funciona como um fantasma transgeracional e intermedial, um transportador de símbolos que assombraram e inspiraram imensos leitores desde a altura em que a obra foi publicada.
