Refletir o Baixo Mondego. Centro Interpretativo das Águas do Mondego (CIAM)

Abstract

A região do Baixo Mondego é, indiscutivelmente, uma área rica e produtiva habitada há muitos séculos, onde, de Coimbra à Figueira da Foz, se faz sentir intensamente o fluir do Rio Mondego, correndo apenas aparentemente pacificado, num corredor natural ambientalmente privilegiado. Mas, aqui, esconde-se a história de um rio que foi brutalmente moldado ao longo de séculos, submetendo-o aos desejos e capacidades dos homens para o controlarem, obviando às vicissitudes com as quais se tinham de confrontar ciclicamente. A sua natureza turbulenta e o vale abrupto sempre provocaram cheias violentas e inesperadas, que rapidamente faziam irromper a destruição. A necessidade de contar esta história, muito pouco ou mal conhecida, foi proposta como razão de base para esta dissertação — como investigação em arquitetura e desenho de projeto — a desenvolver no âmbito desta tese de mestrado. O objetivo do presente trabalho fixou-se na procura de uma solução arquitetónica capaz de dignificar a identidade da região, e na construção de uma arquitetura sensível para a paisagem ribeirinha, capaz de se oferecer também como elemento potenciador do desenvolvimento sustentável, num espaço e lugar de evidente pertinência.O generalizado desconhecimento do povoamento, da história e da evolução do Baixo-Mondego, e a sua secundarização relativamente ao efetivo potencial turístico e ambiental da região, justificam plenamente a necessidade de a abrir e de comunicar amplamente a sua riqueza, transformando-a enquanto destino reconhecível. Por outro lado, o seu valor produtivo, agrícola, e a necessidade de acompanhar os tempos e compatibilizar as ações de génese humana com os objetivos para um futuro mais promissor e ambientalmente comprometido, obrigam à pedagogia clara sobre a antropização de que esta paisagem foi alvo durante séculos, explicitando a necessidade de mitigação e adaptação sensível, que a crise climática atual plenamente justifica. Fazer com que a arquitetura seja parte integrante desse exercício cívico e, simultaneamente, fator de valorização regional, ativando memórias e promovendo futuros em equilíbrio, assume-se como objeto deste projeto de investigação e desenho. Pretende-se valorizar a paisagem do Baixo Mondego a partir da possibilidade de a dar a conhecer, de modo pedagógico e informativo, aliando o reconhecimento local com a descoberta dos paradigmas emergentes, capazes de inverter uma tendência predadora instalada. Importa despertar uma consciencialização, junto dos atuais e futuros residentes, e de todos os visitantes, acerca da importância deste corredor ecológico natural e dos modos como podemos habitá-lo e explorá-lo, produtivamente, respeitando os recursos e os limites naturais dos processos regenerativos, mantendo vivas a biodiversidade e a riqueza ambiental que ainda aqui subsistem. É importante salientar como é relevante o Baixo Mondego no seu todo e, consequentemente, o quanto é indispensável respeitar a região pelos seus elevados valores cultural, histórico, paisagístico, desportivo, social e agrícola, mas, sobretudo, pelo seu caráter ambiental natural, apesar da pesadíssima herança de múltiplas intervenções humanas acumuladas.

The Baixo Mondego region is, undeniably, a rich and productive area inhabited for many centuries, where, from Coimbra to Figueira da Foz, the flow of the River Mondego is intensely felt, flowing only apparently peacefully in an environmentally privileged natural corridor. But, here hides the history of a river that was brutally shaped over centuries, submitting it to the wishes and abilities of men to control it, obviating the vicissitudes with which they had to face cyclically. Its turbulent nature and abrupt valley always provoked violent and unexpected floods, which quickly erupted in destruction. The need to tell this story, very little or poorly known, was proposed as the basic reason for this dissertation - as research in architecture and project design - to be developed within the scope of this master’s thesis. The aim of this work was to find an architectural solution capable of dignifying the identity of the region, and the construction of a sensitive architecture for the riverside landscape, able to offer itself as an element that enhances sustainable development, in a space and place of obvious relevance.The widespread ignorance of the settlement, history and evolution of the Baixo Monondego region, and its marginalization in relation to the effective tourist and environmental potential of the region, fully justifies the need to open it up and communicate its wealth widely, transforming it into a recognizable destination. On the other hand, its productive, agricultural value, and the need to keep up with the times and make human-generated actions compatible with the objectives for a more promising and environmentally committed future, force a clear pedagogy about the anthropization that this landscape has suffered for centuries, making explicit the need for mitigation and sensitive adaptation, which the current climate crisis fully justifies. Making architecture an integral part of this civic exercise and, simultaneously, a factor of regional valorization, activating memories and promoting futures in balance, is the object of this research and design project. It is intended to enhance the Baixo Mondego landscape from the possibility of making it known, in a pedagogical and informative way, combining local recognition with the discovery of emerging paradigms, capable of reversing an installed predatory trend. It is important to raise awareness among current and future residents, and all visitors, about the importance of this natural ecological corridor and the ways in which we can inhabit and explore it, productively, respecting the resources and natural limits of the regenerative processes, keeping alive the biodiversity and environmental wealth that still exist here. It is important to emphasize how relevant the Baixo Mondego region is as a whole and, consequently, how essential it is to respect the region for its high cultural, historical, landscape, sports, social and agricultural values, but, above all, for its natural environmental character, despite the very heavy inheritance of multiple accumulated human interventions.
