dc.description.abstract | The global climate emergency situation has raised the need to establish strategies to enable a sustainable and irreversible path to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Promoting effective responses to the problem of climate change undeniably involves the use of renewable energy sources and their integration into the national energy system. Marine renewable electric energy, namely wave energy, has stood out in these strategies due to its strong potential, still unexplored, to proactively contribute to a sustainable economy. The research, idealization and development of wave energy converters gained expression essentially from the 70s of the last century and since then has not stopped until today. A decisive phase of the development process consists in the evaluation of the environmental impact of the proposed solutions. For this it is essential to know the materials, equipment and processes involved in their production, maintenance and exploitation, as well as how the wave energy converters work and their interaction with the surrounding environment. The nature of many of these factors depends on the type and maturity degree of the technologies underlying the proposed solutions, as well as the biological (fauna and flora) and sedimentary characteristics of the installation site. The present dissertation had the objective to synthesize the potential environmental impacts of the most relevant wave energy technologies. The prospective analysis, for organization of the collected information and comparison of wave energy conversion technologies, has been done through impact matrices. The revision of the bibliography on life cycle assessment of wave energy converters has shown that the phase of the life cycle with the most environmental impact is materials and manufacturing of the device. Among the environmental aspects in the marine environment, the underwater noise was the most frequently mentioned in the consulted works. In relation to the prospective analysis carried out, the Submerged Pressure Differential technology was the one that stood out most positively from the environmental point of view. | eng |
