Literacia em saúde oral e ortodontia

Abstract

Introduction: Health literacy is an important factor for patients' adherence to medicaltreatments and in a way influences them to follow medical instructions as it in a waypromotes skills that encourage people to actively participate in clinical decisions. Oral healthliteracy allows you to prevent diseases and complications in the oral cavity and makedecisions at the right time. Orthodontics, being an area of ​​dentistry, also requires, in a way,the adherence and collaboration of its patients throughout this process.Objective: To assess the level of literacy in oral health in the Portuguese and CapeVerdean population, determine in which literacy is greater, assess the level of knowledgeabout orthodontics and its specialty and see if, in a way, the level of literacy influences theknowledge about orthodontics.Materials and Methods: A total of 104 patients were selected (51 from Cape Verde and 53from Portugal) in the department of stomatology and dental medicine of the Faculty ofMedicine of the University of Coimbra and in several islands of Cape Verde. Statisticalanalysis was performed using the T-student test with a significance level of 5%.Results: In this study, it was found that there were significant associations between theCape Verdean and Portuguese population, since the former has lower literacy inorthodontics and specialty of the same, but these do not show great differences with regardto oral health literacy.Discussion: The level of health literacy is related to the level of education in both populations. Both showed some degree of ignorance about the existence of the orthodontic specialty.Conclusion: This study showed the need to implement literacy plans in oral health and in orthodontics in both countries.

Introdução: Literacia em saúde é um fator importante que promove as competências quepermitem aos doentes participarem ativamente nas decisões clínicas, facilitando a adesãoaos tratamentos. De igual modo, a literacia em saúde oral permite prevenir ou erradicardoenças e complicações na cavidade oral, contribuindo para a saúde oral dos indivíduos. Aortodontia, primeira especialidade da medicina dentária em Portugal, já existente desde1999, deveria ser reconhecida como tal também pela população geral.Objetivos: Avaliar o nível de literacia em saúde oral na população portuguesa e cabo-verdiana, bem como determinar o conhecimento acerca de ortodontia e especialidade domesmo que ambas as populações têm sobre a ortodontia e a especialidade de ortodontia ese este afeta a escolha do tratamento dentário.Material e métodos: Foram questionados 104 pacientes (51 de Cabo Verde e 53 dePortugal) quanto à literacia em saúde oral com a ferramenta Reald-30 e com 2 questionáriosquanto aos conhecimentos em ortodontia e da especialidade de ortodontia. A análiseestatística foi realizada com o teste T-student com nível de significância de 5%.Resultados: Neste estudo verificou-se que havia diferenças estatisticamente significativasentre a população cabo-verdiana e a portuguesa, uma vez que a primeira apresenta menorliteracia em ortodontia e menor conhecimento quanto à especialidade de ortodontia, nãoapresentando diferenças estatisticamente significativas quanto à literacia em saúde oral.Discussão: O nível de literacia em saúde está relacionado com o grau de escolaridade em ambas as populações. Ambas apresentaram algum grau de desconhecimento quanto à existência da especialidade de ortodontia.Conclusão: Este estudo demonstrou a necessidade da criação de planos de literacia quer em saúde oral quer relativamente à ortodontia em ambos os países.
