Life skills are the skills that allow an individual to succeed in their life context, whether at school, at home or in the community (Danish, 1997; Dias, Cruz, & Danish, 2001; Gould & Carson, 2008). More specifically, life skills refer to the personal resources that the individual can train and assume in a given context and then transfer to other domains of his life (e.g., formulating goals, controlling emotions, solving problems). The aim of this study was to explore the transfer of life skills between adults who participate in the martial art Jiu-Jitsu. More specifically, to understand whether through their involvement, they acquired and/or developed life skills, as well as how these skills were learned and whether they were transferred to other domains/contexts of subjects' lives. The results showed that participants perceived that their involvement in Jiu-Jitsu improved their lives in different domains/contexts, and that this improvement seems to arise from the life skills they acquired through the practice. The results also indicated that the support of the instructors and the colleagues in the academies/clubs seem to have played an important role in providing the necessary context for the development of these skills to be possible, as this learning was mostly achieved through implicit processes, and not by the use of explicit pedagogical strategies. For this reason, the possibility arises that it is not absolutely necessary to add a formal life skills programme in addition to regular teaching in sports practices for there to be acquisition and transfers of these skills. Instead, instructors can work to create an atmosphere that is conducive to the acquisition of these skills and provide advice to participants when opportunities arise. |
