O veraneio em Portugal no início do século XX: alguns aspetos

Abstract

Neste estudo é feita a contextualização histórica da emergência do turismo balnear no século XIX, no quadro europeu, e analisa-se, com algum detalhe, o caso português. Este desenvolveu-se em grande medida suscitado pela melhoria das acessibilidades proporcionada pelas construção dos caminhos de ferro, o que vai permitir, mediante a ligação à rede ferroviária espanhola, a afluência de banhistas do país vizinho. Sendo um fenómeno sobretudo associado às classes médias e superiores, descreve-se o dia a dia em “praias de bom-tom”, bem como as principais atividades recreativas praticadas.

This study undergoes an historical contextualization of the rise of seaside tourism in the 19th century, within the European scenario, and it analyses, in detail, the Portuguese situation. This type of tourism developed largely due to the improvement of accessibility, resulting from the railway construction, which allowed, the connection to the Spanish railway and the consequent onflow of bathers from the neighboring country. Since it is a type of tourism associated to the middle and upper classes, the study describes the daily activity in the so called “proper beaches”, as well as the available recreational activities.
