Biography
Doctor Fausto Freire is an Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal. Coordinates the Center for Industrial Ecology (http://www2.dem.uc.pt/CenterIndustrialEcology/) and is a member of the coordination committee of the Energy for Sustainability initiative (http://www.uc.pt/efs). Faculty at the MIT-Portugal program and MIT visiting Scholar (several months in 2011-2012). Fulbright Scholar at the University of Michigan in 2008. Member of the International Society for Industrial Ecology. Member of the Ecoinvent Editorial Board. Reviewer of several WOS Journals (scope of Energy & Environment, Applied Energy, Cleaner Production, Industrial Ecology, LCA…). Senior Member and Expert in Energy of the Portuguese Engineers Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros). Prof. Freire research and teaching interests focuses on ecodesign and life-cycle models to enhance the sustainability of products and systems in the scope of Circular Economy. Has studied and coordinated projects on several products, industrial and energy systems (agro-industry, buildings, electricity, transportation, renewable energy, waste management). Currently, is focused on ecodesign and implementation of Circular Economy systems, as well as extending life cycle assessment to include uncertainty, MCDA, optimization and economic-social aspects towards more sustainable approaches. Previously, developed a novel approach integrating LCA and economic optimization models. Prof. Freire has coordinated several large projects, supervised about twelve postdoctoral researchers, twenty PhD students and several MSc thesis and young researchers. He has received several awards and grants. Prof. Freire is co-author of more than 250 publications (book chapters, WOS articles and conference papers). H Scopus index of 23 and Google scholar H index of 28. Co-Editor-in-Chief of the new Journal of Cleaner Environmental Systems, Elsevier.
