Biography
I did my graduate work in Jonathan Dordick´s lab at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI, Albany, NY) in the development of carbohydrate-based hydrogels, chemically crosslinked, using nonaqueous enzyme technology. I did a first postdoc at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (Porto, Portugal) for 1 year, specifically at the laboratory of Mário Barbosa (2001 George Winter Award from the European Society of Biomaterials). During that time, I contributed for the development of an intervertebral disc prosthesis. I started in the end of 2004 a second postdoc at MIT in the laboratory of Robert Langer (2002 Charles Stark Draper Prize). The major contributions of my postdoc work was to isolate vascular progenitor cells from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), to develop synthetic stem cell niches for the self-renewal and vascular differentiation of hESCs, nanomaterials for cell tracking, elastomeric materials, antifungal hydrogels and Gecko-inspired medical adhesives. When I started my laboratory at CNC, University of Coimbra, in October 2007, I established the field of Biomaterials and Stem Cell-Based Therapeutics within the institution. Presently, 29 researchers including 2 Senior Researcher, 10 Postdocs, 8 PhD students, 6 Technicians and 3 Master students form the research group. The research work has been published in Nature Methods, Nature Protocols, Science Translational Medicine, Nature Communications, PNAS, ACS nano, Advanced Materials and Cell Stem Cell. My independent work has been distinguished with several awards in international meetings and with the Crioestaminal Prize, in recognition of the best biomedical basic research project carried out in Portugal in 2008, an ERC grant in 2012 and a ERA Chair grant in 2016. In the last 10 years I attracted around 10 million euros in grants.
