Abstract
According to WHO, in 2014, 11% of men and 15% of women were obese. In 2008, the direct costs associated to obesity in Portugal was estimated in 85,9 million euros. A healthy lifestyle is crucial to prevent overweight and obesity. So, the availability of supplements made of natural compounds to fight obesity is of great importance. Sulforaphane (SFN) is an isothiocyanate derived from glucoraphanin, a phytochemical present in Brassica vegetables (cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower). Preclinical studies showed that SFN have beneficial effects in the treatment of many diseases, including diabetes and cancer. In 2014, more than 5.3 million tonnes of Brassicas were produced in the European Union, with more than 183 thousand in Portugal, representing large amounts of byproducts with negative economic and environmental impacts.
