The Algarve Margin is located in southern Portugual, northward of the Azores-Gibraltar plate limit, forming, together with its neighboring West Spanish Margin, the northern edge of the Gulf of Cadiz. In this margin a sedimentary basin developed from the Triassic, from onshore to offshore, whose evolution took place mostly in a extensional regime during the Mesozoic, and compressive in the Cenozoic. The presente work shows a gravimetric modeling of the offshore Algarve basin in order to constrain the geometry and thickness of the geological formations, and the geometry and depth of the structures therein. To this purpose, gravimetric maps of Bouguer, Regional and Residual anomalies were built, from gravity data collected during hydrocarbon exploration campaigns carried out during the 1970s and 1980s. The gravimetric modeling was performed based on the geological model obtained by a previous interpretation of a few seismic reflection profiles that were conducted during the same exploration campaign. Despite the limitations found, this study allowed constraining the geometry and thickness of the geological formations and the depth of the basement to offshore. It also highlihted the importance of evaporites in the evolution of this margin. |
