Title: | Rodas Poligonais Regulares e Catenárias | Authors: | Costa, Maria de Lurdes de Freitas Rodrigues | Orientador: | Leite, Maria de Fátima da Silva | Keywords: | Movimento suave; rolar sem deslizar; condição do raio; catenárias; trigonometria hiperbólica; rodas poligonais; smooth movement; rolling without sliding; radius; catenaries; hyperbolic trigonometry; polygonal wheels | Issue Date: | Sep-2012 | Place of publication or event: | Coimbra | Abstract: | A uma roda circular imediatamente associamos uma estrada plana. E se a roda for
quadrada?
estradas.
We immediately associate a flat road to a circular wheel. However, what if the wheel is a square? Or pentagonal? Or, what if it has the form of any other regular polygon. For a vehicle with this type of wheels to move with a smooth movement, e.g. without bumps, it is expected that the road should be different from a flat road. It must be a proper road adapted to the wheel. However, for that to happen, there must be a mathematical connection between wheel and road. A road formed by successive truncated catenary curves is the ideal road for polygonal wheels. The animation in Geogebra performed by the master student allows everyone to view the polygonal wheels and their respective roads. This way, "Regular Polygonal Wheels and Catenary Curves" are an attractive and nonroutine pedagogical and didactic application theme, revealing to the student the importance of mathematics as an interpretation tool as well as a way of interference in real life. |
