Arquitetura e Identidade. Um Projeto de Urbanidade para Ariques, no contexto das Aldeias do Calcário

Abstract

O rural foi em tempos uma importante fonte de rendimento de muitas famílias em Portugal, mas a partir da década de 1950, com a valorização do litoral, perdeu população e serviços, e as estratégias para o seu desenvolvimento foram ineficazes. Atualmente, grande parte do rural está esquecido e não dá resposta às necessidades de quem nele habita. Além disso, muito do seu património, cultural e natural, encontra-se descorado e, mais importante, a sua gestão é feita, sobretudo, com políticas setoriais que procuram a sua valorização por via do turismo. Todos estes fatores contribuem para um esquecimento do interior do país e para vários problemas de ordem social e económica que nele se instalaram durante décadas.Sendo assim, como se deve pensar hoje o seu futuro? Como reforçar a integração destes lugares do “rural profundo”? Qual o papel da arquitetura na “solução”?No interior, existem áreas segregadas, como é o caso do objeto de estudo desta dissertação, as terras de Sicó, mas ao mesmo tempo próximas de núcleos urbanos de média e grande dimensão, com uma boa acessibilidade e com recursos importantes.Neste território, foi criada recentemente a Rede de Aldeias de Calcário (RAC), que tem como principal objetivo a promoção/valorização turística de Sicó. Neste contexto, integrada na disciplina de Atelier de Projeto IIC, criou-se uma estratégia para fazer face à diversidade de problemas e fragilidades deste território, exigindo abordagens complementares, com uma visão integrada. Esta estratégia tenta responder às necessidades da comunidade e do visitante, com a criação de vários programas e serviços interligados entre cada aldeia, onde a ideia de identidade e memória são o grande motor de desenvolvimento.A presente dissertação segue esta visão integrada do território e tem como objetivo desenvolver o que de maior valor existe na aldeia de Ariques, umas das seis aldeias da RAC, e assim (re)conhecer o património natural e cultural como o seu principal recurso, e reforçar a coesão social da pequena comunidade e o espírito de comunidade. Este conjunto de valores cria o centro de identidade de Ariques que se materializa com um complexo multifuncional, resultante da reabilitação de quatro edifícios, onde a marca “calcário”, a arquitetura vernacular, a multifuncionalidade, comunidade e partilha são fatores-chave para o desenvolvimento integrado da aldeia, afirmando assim uma nova centralidade do rural.

Interior rural areas were once an important income source for many families in Portugal. However, after the 1950s, due to the increase in value of coastal regions, interior rural areas lost population and services, and the strategies to promote their development proved ineffective. Today, most interior rural areas are forgotten or unable to meet their populations’ needs. Moreover, much of their cultural and natural heritage is forgotten or managed through sectoral policies that aim to enhance it exclusively through tourism. All these factors contribute to the state of neglect in which the country’s interior finds itself and the many social and economic problems existing there for decades.Therefore, today how should we plan the future of the interior? How can we improve the integration of these “deep rural” areas? What is the role of architecture in “solution”?In the interior, there are marginalized areas close to medium and large urban centers with good access ways and important resources. This is the case of this thesis’ object of study, the Terras de Sicó (Lands of Sicó).The Rede de Aldeias de Calcário (RAC - Limestone Villages Network) was recently created in this territory aimed at the touristic promotion/valorization of Sicó. Within this context and the course unit Atelier Projeto II C, a strategy demanding complementary approaches in an integrated perspective was developed to address the multiple problems and weaknesses present in this territory. This strategy aims to meet the needs of the community and those visiting the territory by developing different interrelated programs and services between the villages, with the concepts of identity and memory as the great driving forces of development.The present dissertation follows this integrated vision of the territory. It aims to develop the potential existing in the village of Ariques, one of the six RAC villages, understanding and acknowledging natural and cultural heritage as its main resource and strengthening this small community’s social cohesion and collective spirit. These values are the foundations of an Identity Center of Ariques, materialized in a multifunctional complex, resulting from the rehabilitation of four buildings, in which “limestone,” vernacular architecture, multifunctionality, community, and sharing constitute the key factors for the village’s integrated development while promoting rural areas’ new centrality.
