There are three major types of EVs: exosomes originating from the endosomal compartment, microvesicles from the cell membrane, and apoptotic bodies released during apoptosis.EVs are known to be released by all cell types and mediate intercellular communication as cell-derived extracellular signaling organelles that transmit specific information from their cell of origin to their target cells. As a result of these properties, EVs may serve as novel tools for various therapeutic approaches, including anti-tumor and anti-parasitic therapies, therapies for neurodegenerative and cardiac diseases, vaccination, and immunotherapy. There are still numerous barriers preventing the use of EVs as therapeutic vehicles. However, as the body of research grows - and with it, the understanding of EVs and their various functions - the therapeutic potential of these organelles starts unraveling.Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small, lipid-enclosed particles with the ability to transport nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids.
