This work intends to contribute to an improved understanding of the aquifer system “O33 - Caldas da Rainha – Nazaré”, especially in what concerns the internal hydrodynamics and morphology of the central sector - Tornada. This study was based primarily on the log reports of water wells that have been drilled in the area. The area analyzed covers approximately 21 km2 and twenty three log reports have been selected. The domain of the aquifer system “O33 - Caldas da Rainha - selected Nazaré” is characterized by: (1) a geology marked by Plio-Pleistocene marine and continental sedimentary formations and by marl-limestone formations of the lower Jurassic; (2) a hydrogeology characterized by the occurrence of interconnected free and semi-confined aquifers, where the basement is the "Marl and Limestones of Dagorda" Formation. Processing of data from literature (in particular geological mapping of the region), from water well log reports, and from field observations was accomplished with several software programs (e.g., Surfer and RockWorks). This allowed the preparation of following results: - The aquifer imbedded in the Plio-Pleistocene formations is split into two sections separated by the central outcrop of the "Marl and Limestones of Dagorda" Formation; - Intra-aquifer hydrodynamics in the west sector is characterized by: (1) low hydraulic gradient in the east and high in the west (aquifer recharge zone); (2) water-bearing areas with very high productivity (>30 m3/h) - Intra-aquifer hydrodynamics in the east is characterized by: (1) low hydraulic gradient in the west and high gradient in the north (aquifer discharge zone); (2) this sector is the less productive of the studied zone where seldom are obtained flows above 15 m3 / h. - The geometry of the west sector is characterized by: (1) a depression with a syncline shape aligned in the direction WE; (1) its basement is highly irregular, however there are two more pronounced depressions aligned NW-SE; (2) it shows a nearly flat top; (3) the W and E sides have softer slopes, while the N and S sides follow the same pattern as the base of the aquifer. - The sector geometry of the east sector is characterized by: (1) it is regular in all the quadrants, where it is not possible to observe large variations in their geometry; (2) in the EW direction, the aquifer forms a syncline shape but with softer contours than the west sector; - The aquifer morphology is clearly constrained by the following factors: (1) structural controls, possibly by existing faults that are covered by the Plio-Pleistocene formations; (2) (paleo)geomorphological and (paleo)depositional factors, where the thickness of the aquifer is controlled by both factors. - The thickness of the aquifer is directly related to its productivity.
