dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Cataract is one of the most prevalent causes of blindness in the world, which can be surgically corrected by replacing the lens with an intraocular lens, which allows the patient an immediate improvement of his visual acuity in the postoperative period. Different types of intraocular lenses (IO) translate different levels of visual acuity into various distances, with different adverse effects, perceived by patients as glares and halos. Recently, a new type of lens was introduced - AcrySof® IQ Vivity®. The aim of our study was to evaluate the visual and functional results of lenses inserted in the clinical practice of the Ophthalmology service of CHUC - IOL Alcon Clareon (monofocal) and IOL Alcon PanOptix (trifocal), and compare them with the new IOL Alcon Vivity (extended depth of focus). Materials and Methods: The study had an observational character, and the researchers had no interference in the selection of the lens to be implanted. A total of 14 participants were considered in the study, 4 with Alcon Clareon and 10 with Alcon PanOptix. They were submitted to cataract emulsification with bilateral IO implantation and there were no complications or any associated eye comorbidities during the procedure. For the purposes of the study, visual acuity was assessed for near, intermediate and far vision, contrast sensitivity, and the presence of photic phenomena, one month after surgery, during consultation. For the evaluation and comparison of IOL Vivity, the study of Alcon – "Clinical Outcomes of a Novel Non-Diffractive Extended Vision IOL " was used. Results: The results of our study demonstrate that IOL Alcon Vivity (EDOF) is able to overcome the main gaps conditioned by IOL Alcon Clareon and Alcon PanOptix. The first (monofocal design) presented, on average, a better quality for long-distance vision with fewer associated undesirable effects, while the second (trifocal) attained, on average, better results for intermediate and near distances, but with more adverse effects. Discussion: Alcon Vivity IOL has potentially better visual results than Alcon Clareon IOL for intermediate and close vision, maintaining a low rate of undesirable effects, unlike Alcon PanOptix IOL. Therefore, we can infer that the new Alcon Vivity IOL will allow the physician greater flexibility in his alternatives of choice for replacing the lens, during the preoperative consultation, and opens a door for new approaches and studies for a scientific community. | eng |
