Report written in the context of a Final Work of the Integrated Master of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, Portugal. An analysis focused on a 1st person experience of a volunteering of professional nature at the Portuguese Red Cross, specifically at the Coimbra delegation, by a student of the 6th year of the Integrated Master of Medicine.I started volunteering in 2019 and I have come to notice that I have a different way of seeing the world compared to some of my university colleagues, seeing patients and dealing with people. I feel that I have a greater contact with the hospital environment and more opportunities to put into practice the knowledge acquired as a medical student. As such, I intend to demonstrate how this type of volunteering benefits my training in general.I report my experiences and how I feel that I have changed and in what aspects I have done it. The comparisons I make are in relation to my fellow students, making a generalization of them.I argue, in a reasoned way, how teaching at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra may be compromised due to the high student-tutor ratio, and how there is a general dissatisfaction among students due to this problem.Afterwards, I give a succinct exposition of my experiences and how they shaped the person I am today, how they helped me feel more fulfilled and, on the way, to becoming a better first responder and future health professional. In this report I highlight how, in the context of exercising my volunteering activity, some aspects overlap between the role of a Red Cross first responder and that of a doctor, hence I consider volunteering at this institution as an important complement to the curriculum of a Medicine student.eng
