Abstract: Introduction: The problem of patients' non-adherence to therapy is of paramount importance, both in controlling the disease and in minimizing the costs and risks for the patient, his family and the National Health System (NHS).Arterial hypertension is the main risk factor in cardiovascular diseases (CVD), where it manifests slow and asymptomatic, its diagnosis, in many cases, being too late. Even with correct therapy the control of arterial hypertension, in Portugal, is of about 42,5%.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine whether knowledge about hypertension influenced adherence to hypertension therapyMethods: Observational cross-sectional study in a Primary Care Unit in Central Portugal ( USF Topázio, Eiras, Coimbra), where hypertensive patients in a follow-up consultation were randomly invited to participate, answering a questionnaire with the Portuguese version of the HKT Hypertension Knowledge Test (HKT-pt-PT).The assessment of knowledge was stratified by sociodemographic factors (age and gender), clinical factors (hypertension controlled or not depending on the last two BP values measured at the consultation) and therapeutic factors (number of antihypertensive drugs). After a brief explanation of the procedure, informed consent was obtained for the responses and authorization for treatment of the data. The self-administered questionnaires were returned to the doctor or nurse at the end.For data processing we used the statistical program SPSS.Results: 80 patients participated, with a mean age of 41.59± 25.315. For 81%, there was the assumption of having arterial hypertension controlled, no difference existing between genders, p=0.469. A mean±dp of 1.84 ± 1.02 drugs per patient was self-related. The average HKT score was 11.5 ± 5, median 13,5, with Cronbach's alpha (α = 0.747). A very week non-significant correlation was found between the number of anti-hypertensive medications and the total score of HKT (ρ=0,028; p=0.806).Conclusions: A high proportion of this sample states having arterial hypertension controlled, no difference between genders. No correlation was found between knowledge about hypertension number of anti-hypertensive medications.
