Title: | Software Defined Joint Optical Wireless Communication and Sensing System Using the OFDM Waveform | Other Titles: | Plataforma conjunta de comunicação e sensoriamento definida por software | Authors: | Muller, Eduardo Bezzi | Orientador: | Medeiros, Maria do Carmo Raposo de | Keywords: | OFDM; LIDAR; OWC; FSO; LANDMARK; OFDM; LIDAR; OWC; FSO; LANDMARK | Issue Date: | 26-Nov-2021 | Serial title, monograph or event: | Software Defined Joint Optical Wireless Communication and Sensing System Using the OFDM Waveform | Place of publication or event: | DEEC | Abstract: | The new development of automation such as self-driving vehicles; low earth orbit satellites; autonomous units (AU), need an integrated high data transmission with the ability to locate itself in relation to other units or obstacles. This dissertation presents a software-defined solution of a joint communication and sensing system using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. This software solution is flexible in its implementation, being able to be deployed in many environments. The joint system has the advantages of using the already existing data communication infrastructure but gaining new capabilities of detection and ranging, through signal processing. At the same time saving bandwidth by sharing the spectrum. We start with a brief history of the radar/lidar is presented with its advantages and applications. Followed by the mathematical model of Optical Wireless Communication (OWC), OFDM waveform, the signal processing method, and finally the joint model. Continuing by an implementation in MATLAB, which demonstrated the relations of the communication requirements and the sensing resolutions, and the effect of the noise on the measured Error Vector Magnitude (EVM). Finally, the joint system is validated in an OWC link, with 520 nm laser diode, by displacing a mirror and detecting the reflected laser beam. It was possible to calculate the distance of the mirror with respect to the transceiver as well as to transmit data, achieving a resolution of 15 cm with maximum distance of 100 m. And a maximum data rate of 4Gbps.
