During the preventive archaeological intervention in the convent of São Francisco (located in Coimbra, on the left bank of the Mondego) carried out under the project “CULTURAL AND CONVENTION SPACE IN THE CONVENT OF S. FRANCISCO IN COIMBRA - auditorium, convent, restaurant”, promoted by the Municipality of Coimbra, several zones were found that correspond to the contemporary period, including zones G and F, where a structured necropolis was identified (Corga et al., 2014). From this necropolis, 601 adults and non-adults of both sexes were exhumed, dating from the first half of the 19th century, a very unstable period for Portugal (invasions, liberal wars and epidemics) (Corga et al., 2014). It was possible to identify two distinct phases of use of the necropolis (Corga et al., 2014).This study focuses on a sample of 60 adult individuals of both sexes from the second phase of burials, chronologically located in the beginning of the 19th century. The objective is to carry out a general paleopathological analysis of the sample, describe each lesion in detail, analyze the relationship between the type of lesion and each bone piece/anatomical part, analyze the type of pathology that may have been at its origin, and the relationship between the type of pathology and the age group and, in some cases, clarify the circumstances of the death of these individuals. The work was carried out using macroscopic observation. The results obtained show that the most common injuries are new bone formation and bone destruction. The bone pieces with the most evidence of injury are the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, the right humerus, the femurs, the tibia and both fibulae. It is in the postcranial skeleton that the greatest number of lesions are observed. The most common type of pathology is infectious, followed by traumatic, in all age groups. For future work, it will be important to carry out a more detailed analysis of the pathologies for the entire collection.eng
