Pharmaceuticals and personal care products are increasingly difficult to remove through conventional effluent treatment methods. Therefore, in this work, photocatalysts of doped titanium dioxide were synthesized and used to study the degradation efficiency of drugs under the action of sunlight. We also studied the importance of the existence of a superparamagnetic core of iron oxide in some of the synthesized photocatalysts, to facilitate its separation from the liquid medium. The two synthesis techniques used were sol-gel and microemulsion, respectively, for titanium dioxide (doped and non-doped) and for iron oxide. After reviewing the literature, the initial studies involved the development of nanostructured photocatalysts of titanium dioxide doped with copper, magnesium, and silver, having been used for such nitrates of these metals in the experimental protocol of synthesis of titanium. Two calcination temperatures were also used: 400 and 500 ºC. The materials synthesized with this individual or combined dopants were characterized for their optical, structural, and magnetic properties, and their photocatalytic properties were evaluated for degradation of the pollutant studied throughout the dissertation, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Through the analysis of DRS, the nanostructures to be used in photocatalysis were selected through the bandgap energy value obtained: TiO2 400 ºC, 0.2Cu/TiO2 400 ºC, 0.2Cu/IO@SiO2 _P1@TiO2 400 ºC, TiO2 500 ºC, 0.2Cu/TiO2 500 ºC, 0.2Mg/TiO2 500 ºC, 0.3Ag/TiO2 500 ºC, 0.2Cu0.2Mg/TiO2 500 ºC, 0.2Cu0.2Mg/IO@SiO2 _P2@TiO2 500 ºC, 0.2Cu0.2Mg0.3Ag/TiO2 500 ºC and 0.2Cu0.2Mg0.3Ag/IO@SiO2 _P2@TiO2 500 ºC. The coefficients associated with electronic transitions n=1/2 or n=2 were those selected for analysis, considering the E g obtained for commercial catalysts (Degussa P25), TiO2 400 ºC, and TiO2 500 ºC (values between 3.1 and 3.4 eV). From the UV-vis study of degradation under sunlight, it was concluded that the results obtained were well below the expected, given that, in general, the percentages of SMX degradation were quite low in the two days of exposure. However, the doped catalyst 0.2Mg/TiO2 500 ºC showed the best degradation results, in the order of 52% and 87%, respectively, with a kinetic constant of k=0.003 min -1. The HPLC technique identified photoproducts and intermediates as well as the study of the photo transformation of sulfamethoxazole. The materials subjected to XRD presented an average crystalline size never exceeding 130 nm. The catalysts TiO2 500 ºC, 0.2Cu/TiO2 500 ºC and 0.2Cu0.2Mg0.3Ag/IO@SiO2 _P2@TiO2 500 ºC presented higher crystalline size for anatase (39.8 nm; 40.1 nm and 36.2 nm, respectively) compared to the commercial catalyst. In the case of the rutile crystalline phase, the 0.2Mg/TiO2 500 ºC was the material with the highest value (126.6 nm). By the micrographs obtained by SEM, of the three dopants, the best-integrated samples were copper, followed by silver, and finally, magnesium, when isolated. The catalyst 0.2Mg/TiO2 500 ºC was the one that obtained a more similar structure in relation to the commercial catalyst. In the case of the sample 0.2Cu0.2Mg0.3Ag/IO@SiO2 _P2@TiO2 500 ºC, the dopants are all in the same mass amount in the photocatalyst. The VSM analysis confirmed that the saturation magnetization of the material 0.2Cu0.2Mg0.3Ag/IO@SiO2 _P2@TiO2 500 ºC was 4.4 emu/g at 2 K and 0.7 emu/g at 300 K. Through the graphic representation of magnetization as a function of the magnetic field, it was concluded that the nanostructure presented superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K. The blocking temperature obtained by the FC and ZFC curves was 80 K.
