Interações: O Estudante de Medicina e a unidade curricular de Medicina Geral e Familiar do 5º ano, o Estágio Profissionalizante da FMUC e o Médico de Família

Abstract

Introduction: Medical students have shown a decline of interest in General and Family Medicine, which has been reflected in the choice of this specialty as a future medical career. In such ambience, this study aims to verify the relationship between the assessment attributed by students to the teaching method of the 5th year of General and Family Medicine curricular unit and the 6th year of professionalizing internship, the vision of their Family Doctor and the possibility of choosing General and Family Medicine as a future area of specialization.Methods: The interactions between the medical student and the 5th year of General and Family Medicine curricular unit, the 6th year of professionalizing internship and the Family Doctor were studied on an observational transversal work by applying a questionnaire that included the Attitudes towards Doctors and Medicine Scale and the Trust in Physician Scale, by a Facebook invitation which occurred between June and October 2019. Adequate descriptive and inferential statistics were applied with difference definition for p<0,05.Results: The results show that, of the 85 participants, 78,8% consider pursuing studies in the specialty of General and Family Medicine. In addition, the quality of teaching in this area at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra was rated from satisfactory to excellent in 96,5% of those inquired. Divergent responses were obtained in the applied Scales, which somewhat tended mainly to attribute a satisfactory assessment to the health care received and a high confidence in the Doctor. Significant differences were found between the variable share of the residence and the degree of agreement selected for the statement “I trust my doctor to tell me if an error was made during my treatment.”.Discussion: This study of specific factors capable of influencing the choice of the General and Family Medicine specialty corresponds to a primary approach of this theme at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. The curricular unit of General and Family Medicine in the 5th year and the Professionalising Internship in the 6th year are subject to pedagogical changes to improve the quality of teaching to be reflected in student’s opinion.Conclusion: This study suggests that the quality of teaching in the area of General and Family Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and the student’s view of their Family Doctor influence their choice as a future specialty.

Introdução: Os estudantes de Medicina têm apresentado um declínio de interesse sobre a Medicina Geral e Familiar, o que se tem vindo a repercutir na escolha desta especialidade como futura carreira médica. Atendendo a esta problemática, este estudo pretende verificar a relação entre a avaliação atribuída pelos alunos ao método de ensino da unidade curricular de MGF do 5o ano e do Estágio Profissionalizante do 6o ano, a visão sobre o seu Médico de Família e a possibilidade de escolha da Medicina Geral e Familiar como área futura de especialização.Materiais e Métodos: As interações entre o estudante de Medicina e a unidade curricular de MGF do 5o ano, o Estágio Profissionalizante e o Médico de Família foram estudadas pela aplicação de um questionário que incluiu a Escala de Atitude Face aos Médicos e à Medicina e a Escala de Confiança no Médico, por convite via Facebook entre junho e novembro de 2019. Realizou-se estatística descritiva e inferencial adequada com definição de diferença para p<0,05.Resultados: Verificou-se que dos 85 participantes, 78,8% pondera prosseguir estudos na especialidade de Medicina Geral e Familiar. Ademais, a qualidade do ensino ministrado nesta área na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra foi avaliada entre satisfatória a ótima em 96,5% dos inquiridos. Nas Escalas aplicadas obtiveram-se respostas algo divergentes, que tendiam maioritariamente para a atribuição de uma avaliação satisfatória aos cuidados de saúde recebidos e uma elevada confiança no Médico. Averiguaram-se diferenças significativas entre a variável partilha da residência e o grau de concordância selecionado para a afirmação “Eu confio que o meu médico me conte se algum erro foi cometido durante o meu tratamento.”.Discussão: Este estudo de fatores específicos capazes de influenciar a escolha da especialidade de Medicina Geral e Familiar corresponde a uma abordagem primordial desta temática na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra. À unidade curricular de Medicina Geral e Familiar do 5o ano e ao Estágio Profissionalizante do 6o ano são passíveis alterações pedagógicas para melhoria da qualidade do ensino a ser refletida na opinião estudantil.Conclusão: Este estudo sugere que a qualidade do ensino na área da Medicina Geral e Familiar na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra e a visão do estudante sobre o seu Médico de Família influenciam a sua escolha como futura especialidade.
