O registo oral escrito e outros desafios de tradução Proposta de tradução de "Marius et Jeannette" de Robert Guédiguian

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem por objeto de estudo o guião da obra cinematográfica "Marius et Jeannette", longa-metragem realizada por Robert Guédiguian, em 1997, e enquadra-se no âmbito do Mestrado de Tradução.O ensaio de tradução de "Marius et Jeannette" nasce, essencialmente, da vontade de analisar as principais diferenças entre o registo oral francês e o registo oral português. Partindo da hipótese de que a língua francesa é mais rica e desafiante do ponto de vista do registo oral, pareceu-nos interessante explorar essas características e tentar transpô-las para a língua portuguesa sem esquecer, obviamente, outros aspetos importantes do texto.Especificamos, desde já, que a proposta de tradução de língua francesa para língua portuguesa se foca no guião original e não foi pensada para fins de legendagem, área da tradução que teria apresentado características e desafios diferentes.O objetivo consiste em focar-nos no conteúdo, mais do que na forma, do texto de chegada e refletir sobre os desafios da tradução, com especial enfâse nos aspetos relacionados com o registo oral e com as referências culturais.Naturalmente, durante a análise do guião original, foram surgindo outras questões pertinentes que foram destacadas ao longo dos diferentes capítulos e secções que compõem o presente trabalho.O trabalho encontra-se dividido em cinco capítulos.No primeiro capítulo, apresentaremos a obra cinematográfica, assim como os contextos espacial, temporal, social e político.Após uma apresentação da obra e do autor ainda no primeiro capítulo, abordaremos, num segundo capítulo, o pensamento tradutológico que seguiremos como orientação de fundo: definiremos o pensamento orientador bem como as estratégias tradutivas a que recorreremos. Para tal, será apresentada uma pequena introdução abordando incontornavelmente a questão da tradução cultural ou tradução da cultura. Após abordarmos a teoria do "skopos" de Christiane Nord, será feita uma análise do conceito de estrangeirização e domesticação e, por fim, definiremos o papel do tradutor.No terceiro capítulo, será apresentado o ensaio de tradução de Marius et Jeannette para língua portuguesa. A tradução será principalmente realizada de acordo com o conceito de estrangeirização e, por momentos, domesticação e terá em conta todos os elementos referidos no capítulo precedente.No quarto capítulo, será realizada uma autoanálise do ensaio de tradução que produzimos bem como das estratégias tradutivas utilizadas, que serão detalhadamente comentadas. Para tal, será feito um reagrupamento dos principais desafios de tradução em várias categorias, com base em exemplos específicos do texto de partida e de chegada: numa primeira secção, será estabelecida a terminologia utilizada na análise textual e na segunda secção, será analisada a tipologia textual do guião e as convenções a ela associadas. Depois de abordar estes temas mais gerais, serão analisadas questões mais específicas relacionadas com o registo oral, nomeadamente: o coloquialismo, os palavrões, a adaptação da grafia à pronúncia, as repetições e hesitações, as muletas verbais, as onomatopeias, as estruturas incompletas e digressões, as formas de tratamento e os desvios gramaticais.No quinto e último capítulo, reagruparemos os restantes desafios de tradução em secções dedicadas ao “intraduzível”, à tradução das referências culturais, à tradução do humor e à tradução das canções.Por fim, as considerações finais visam apresentar algumas ideias que, em suma, resumem a problemática desenvolvida neste projeto e deixam antever outras, não menos importantes, que apenas identificamos e que, inevitavelmente, ficam por explorar.

This project is based on the study of the movie script "Marius et Jeannette", a feature movie directed by Robert Guédiguian in 1997, and is presented in the context of the Translation Master's Degree.The translation of "Marius et Jeannette" arises from the curiosity of analyzing the main differences between the French and Portuguese oral communication. Assuming that the French is a more rich and challenging language from the oral communication perspective, it seemed interesting to explore those characteristics and try to replicate them in Portuguese, keeping in mind other important aspects of the text.Right away, we want to specify that the translation from French into Portuguese focuses on the original script and is not intended for subtitling, which is a domain that presents different characteristics and challenges.The goal is to focus on the content, rather than on the structure, of the target text and to reflect about the translation challenges encountered, specially about those related to the oral communication and the cultural references.Naturally, during the analysis of the original script, we came across other relevant issues that were duly highlighted in the different chapters and sections of the project.The project is divided into five chapters.In the first chapter, we will introduce the cinematographic work, as well as the space, time, social, and political contexts.After the introduction of the script and the director in the first chapter, we will address, in the second chapter, the translation theories that will guide our project: we will define the guiding principals, but also the translation theories used. In that sense, we will present a brief introduction of the fundamental issue that is the cultural translation. After explaining Christiane's Nord "skopos" theory, we will analyze the concepts of foreignization and domestication and, finally, the translator's role.In the third chapter, we will present the translation of "Marius et Jeannette" from French into Portuguese. The translation will be based on the concept of foreignization, and sometimes domestication, and will take into consideration all the elements mentioned in the previous chapter.In the fourth chapter, we will present an autoanalyzis of the translations, as well as of the translation strategies used, which will be analyzed in detail. In that perspective, we will group the main translation challenges into diverse categories, based on specific examples taken from the source and target text: in the first section, we will determine the terminology applied in the textual analysis and, in the second section, we will analyse the textual typology of the script and the associated conventions.After addressing the more general subjects, we will analyse more specific issues related with the oral communication, including colloquialism, curse words, adaptation of the spelling to the pronunciation, repetitions and hesitations, verbal accessories, onomatopoeia, incomplete structures and excursions, forms of treatment and grammatical mistakes.In the fifth chapter, we will group the remaining translation challenges in different sections dedicated to the "untranslatable", the translation of cultural references, the translation of humor and the translation of songs.Finally, the final considerations will present a few ideas that sum up the problematic carried out in this project and will allow us to predict other issues, as well as important, that we barely identified and were not explored.
