A importância do contexto na tradução

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever o meu percurso efetuado no estágio curricular na empresa Smartidiom, entre 15 de fevereiro e 14 de maio, bem como a experiência adquirida e as reflexões que resultaram dela.Na primeira parte, apresento a entidade de acolhimento e a admissão a estágio, as funções desempenhadas, a organização e comunicação no estágio, as CAT tools utilizadas, a revisão antes da entrega e a entrega do trabalho, e a escolha do tema. Como estudante do Mestrado de Tradução, sempre nos foram fornecidos os devidos materiais de referência, bem como em que contexto se enquadrava uma determinada situação. A mudança para o mercado de trabalho, apesar de ser um estágio, revelou-se bastante diferente das aulas. Foram surgindo alguns problemas de tradução, mais precisamente com frases e expressões de difícil traduzibilidade, por falta de referências. O objetivo da segunda parte deste relatório é, assim, analisar o tema “A importância do contexto na tradução”, apresentar as minhas dificuldades, expor as devidas soluções e definir as bases teóricas necessárias que as fundamentam.Na secção 2 apresento várias posições teóricas que referem o quão importante é o contexto no que toca à tradução. Na secção 3 refiro os aspetos positivos do contexto e dos materiais de referência, no que toca à tradução na minha experiência de estágio. De seguida apresento as dificuldades e problemas com que me deparei durante os três meses do estágio, particularmente pela falta de material de referência e de contexto na tradução. Para concluir, faço algumas observações finais que elucidam sobre a importância do contexto, especialmente para um tradutor estagiário. A verdade é que os clientes não sabem quem vai traduzir e não podem presumir que vai ser um estagiário; e talvez tenha sido essa a razão, pela qual não soube resolver certos problemas da melhor forma: a falta de experiência. De qualquer maneira, julgo que caso o cliente queira que o seu texto seja traduzido da melhor forma possível, deveria fornecer os devidos materiais ao tradutor, de modo a que o mesmo consiga atender às expectativas do cliente.

This paper aims to describe the work I carried out during the curricular internship in the translation company Smartidiom, between February 15th and May 14th as well as the experience acquired, and the considerations that stemmed from the experience.In the first portion, I render the hosting body and the admission to the internship, the duties performed, the organization and communication of the internship, the CAT tools used, the review before delivery and delivery of the work, and the choice of the subject.As a student in the Translation Master, I have always been provided with the appropriate reference materials, and the context of a particular situation. Moving to the labour market, despite being an internship, proved to be quite different from classes. During my internship I had various translation issues; More precisely with phrases and expressions that are difficult to translate due to the lack of references. The second portion of this paper aims to address the subject “The importance of context in translation”, present my difficulties, to set out the appropriate solutions and to define the necessary theoretical bases for my solutions.In section 2 I provide a number of theoretical theories which mention how important the context is for translation. In section 3, I name the positive aspects of the context and reference materials with regard to translation during my internship. Below I set out the difficulties and problems I encountered during the three months of the internship, particularly due to the lack of reference material and context in translation.Finally, I make a final comment that clarifies the importance of the context, especially for a trainee translator. The truth is that clients don’t know who will translate their work and cannot assume that the translator will be a trainee. Perhaps this was the reason why I was not able to solve certain problems in the best way: the lack of experience. Regardless, I believe that if the clients want their work to be translated in the best way possible, they should provide the translator with the correct materials, so that the translator can meet the client’s expectations.
