Contando uma história de género chinesa: Da Mulan CI à heroína de Hollywood

Abstract

A dissertação compara e analisa as semelhanças e diferenças nas ações e ideologias de Mulan em versões escritas e cinematográficas, revelando as diferenças na cultura e normas éticas nacionais, analisando o estatuto da mulher em diferentes ambientes, e procurando alcançar uma compreensão mais profunda das origens das culturas chinesas em comparativo com as culturas ocidentais. A dissertação está dividida em quatro partes. O primeiro capítulo traça e explica a figura heroica feminina de Hua Mulan. O segundo capítulo procura localizar a discussão na identidade e o género da figura feminina de Hua Mulan e no antigo ambiente social chinês. O terceiro capítulo trata de como a imagem de Mulan é interpretada pelo Ocidente e pela Disney e como se compara com a imagem da nativa Mulan chinesa. O capítulo quatro faz uma análise da interpretação do género da personagem, das relações de ambiente familiar, e da vida emocional de Hua Mulan nas versões chinesa e ocidentais do filme Mulan. As conclusões que chegamos se referem a uma ocidentalização da imagem de Mulan nas versões da Disney, com mudanças na subjetividade da personagem com relação ao poema original. Através da análise das causas deste fenómeno, é possível o intercâmbio e o diálogo entre a literatura chinesa e a literatura ocidental de uma perspectiva intercultural. Ao mesmo tempo, é fácil ver que a situação social real de cada nação é o terreno para a criação ficcional, mediática e cultural. Nesse sentido, Mulan Ci poderá transcender as limitações nacionais e históricas e ter um apelo artístico duradouro que nos ajude a situar as mulheres no contexto histórico em que vivem, mas que lhes deverá sempre reconhecer a sua força para mudar a História.

The dissertation compares and analyses the similarities and differences in the actions and ideologies of Mulan in different film versions, revealing the differences in national culture and ethical norms, analyzing the reasons for differences in the status of women in different environments, and seeking to achieve a deeper understanding of the origins of Chinese and Western cultures. The dissertation is divided into four parts. The first chapter traces and explains the heroic female figure of Hua Mulan. The second chapter seeks to locate the discussion in the identity and gender of the female figure of Hua Mulan in the ancient Chinese social environment. Chapter three deals with how the image of Mulan is interpreted by Western Disney and how it compares with the image of the native Chinese Mulan. Chapter four provides an analysis of the interpretation of the character gender, family environment relationships, and Hua Mulan emotional life in the Chinese and Western versions of the film Mulan. The conclusions we reached refer to a Westernization of the image of Mulan in the Disney versions, with changes in the character's subjectivity in relation to the original poem. By analyzing the causes of this phenomenon, it is possible to exchange and dialogue between Chinese literature and Western literature from an intercultural perspective. At the same time, it is easy to see that the real social situation of each nation is the terrain for fictional, media and cultural creation. In this sense, Mulan Ci will be able to transcend national and historical limitations and have a lasting artistic appeal that will help us to place women in the historical context in which they live, but which must always recognize their strength to change history.
