Abstract: Soil is the most abundant natural building material in nature and often has properties that make it attractive for use in construction due to its strength, pleasant aesthetic appearance, plasticity and low cost.Nevertheless, not all soils can be used in construction. Some, due to properties such as grain size, mineralogy or the presence of organic matter, are not, by their own, mechanically competent. There is, thus, a choice to make between transporting a mechanically competent soil from another location, or improving the quality of the soil existing at that location. In this work, the improvement of soil properties through stabilization with Portland cement was studied, which can significantly reduce the budget parcel associated with the transport of naturally competent soil from a distant location.Soil stabilization with Portland cement modifies its properties through physicochemical processes that occur between soil grains and cement, promoting the formation of a skeleton that binds and envelops the grains, strengthening the soil. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of water content, binder content, and the amount of fines on the mechanical behavior of the soil-cement mixture, through unconfined compressive strength tests and split tensile strength tests. It was possible to conclude that the mechanical behavior improved with the increase of the curing time and binder content. A ratio between the tensile strength and the unconfined compressive strength was defined. It was determined that there is an “optimum” water content that results in a more competent mechanical behavior. It was concluded that there is an optimum water/cement (w/c) ratio for each binder content, and that it tends to decrease with the increase of the latter. The addition of fines improved the mechanical behavior of specimens prepared with excess of water, permitting a greater number of cementitious bonds between soil particles.
