Narrativas do Jornalismo Português: A cobertura da morte de grandes figuras

Abstract

A presente tese procura contribuir para o crescimento do subdomínio dos Estudos Narrativos Mediáticos, partindo do amplo debate em torno da influência do medium sobre a própria narrativa. Estando por realizar, em Portugal, uma análise diacrónica sistematizada e contextualizada das narrativas de imprensa, sob o ponto de vista da narratividade, este constitui-se como objetivo central deste trabalho. Assim, procura-se responder à seguinte questão: qual o impacto dos sucessivos avanços tecnológicos nos dispositivos de mediação, dos contextos socioprofissionais das redações e das mudanças sociopolíticas do país na narratividade dos textos jornalísticos? Para encontrar respostas, esta investigação assenta no cruzamento de uma pesquisa teórica interdisciplinar com a concretização de uma análise empírica a um corpus constituído por 1041 peças de imprensa, retiradas do Diário de Notícias, o diário de abrangência nacional que marca o nascimento da imprensa industrializada em Portugal e ainda hoje se mantém em banca. Deste modo, o presente trabalho subdivide-se em três partes distintas. A primeira parte procura esclarecer um dos conceitos centrais presentes na questão de partida, a narratividade, abordando questões como a narratividade dos textos jornalísticos, a narratividade digital e a morte enquanto valor-notícia e momento propício à construção de personagens jornalísticas. A segunda parte tem como objetivo enquadrar a evolução do Diário de Notícias no contexto português. Por fim, a terceira parte apresenta a metodologia, constituída por técnicas de análise de discurso (qualitativa) e análise de conteúdo (quantitativa), bem como os resultados da análise do corpus, do qual fazem parte narrativas jornalísticas acerca da morte de nove políticos portugueses, falecidos em tempos e contextos distintos. Conclui-se, essencialmente, que os diversos contextos identificados – nomeadamente os sucessivos avanços tecnológicos e as mudanças sociopolíticas do país, manifestados ao longo de mais de um século e meio – influenciam o conteúdo da narrativa jornalística, a sua forma e a comunicação narrativa, mas não a narratividade. Assim, as caraterísticas básicas da narrativa mantêm-se, independentemente dos contextos e dos suportes mediáticos, pelo que se torna possível, no final, propor uma definição abrangente de narrativa jornalística.

This research aims to contribute to the development of the field of Narrative Media Studies, as a part of the broad debate about the influence of the particular medium on the narrative. In the absence of a contextualized and systematic diachronic analysis of press narratives in Portugal, from the narrativity point of view, in this research we intend to close gaps in the current research. Given this context, we tried to answer the following question: what is the impact of successive technological advances on mediation devices, the socio-professional contexts of newsrooms, and the country's socio-political changes in the narrativity of journalistic texts? To answer this question, this research builds on a set of the crossroads between interdisciplinary theoretical research with implementation of empirical analysis, based on a set of 1041 press news, extracted from Diário de Notícias, a national Portuguese daily newspaper that saw the beginning of the industrialized press in Portugal and remains in circulation today. Therefore, the current research is subdivided to three different parts. In the first, we seek to better clarify the narrativity, one of the crucial concepts incorporated in the research question, approaching issues such as the narrativity of journalistic texts, the digital narrativity, and the death as news value and turning point as to the construction of journalistic characters. In the second part, we intend to provide a framework for the evolution of Diário de Notícias in the Portuguese media context. Lastly, we present the methodology, which is constituted by discourse analysis techniques (qualitative analysis) and content analysis (quantitative analysis), as well the results of the empirical analysis, which includes the journalistic narratives about the death of nine Portuguese politicians in different times and contexts. We conclude that the different identified contexts, namely the successive technological advances and the Portuguese socio-political changes, manifested over more than a century and a half, influence the content of the journalistic narrative, its form and narrative communication, but not, however, the narrativity principle. Thus, we can conclude that the basic characteristics of the narrative remain, regardless of the contexts and media supports; therefore, it becomes possible, finally, to propose a comprehensive definition of journalistic narrative.
