A arquidiocese de Maceió: uma análise do processo de estruturação da Igreja Católica no território alagoano

Abstract

A investigação sobre o processo de estruturação eclesiástica no território alagoano, desde a análise da documentação conservada, principalmente, nos arquivos do Vaticano, possibilita a compreensão de diversos aspectos relacionados com o desenvolvimento da Igreja Católica no Brasil, após a proclamação da República (1889). Eventos da esfera eclesiástica, como as criações de circunscrições, bispados, arcebispados e prelazias, não obstante a Lei de Separação de 1890, estiveram estreitamente alinhados com as disputas políticas e os interesses de governadores, senadores e deputados. A criação do bispado de Alagoas (1900) e a elevação do bispado a arcebispado de Maceió (1920) foram iniciadas por governadores, como demonstram os pedidos que chegaram à nunciatura apostólica, e financiadas com recursos públicos; demonstrando, assim, que o princípio da laicidade, elemento basilar do Estado republicano, não tinha sido ainda efetivado no território alagoano. A evolução das estruturas eclesiásticas foi, ao mesmo tempo, um projeto do Estado e da Igreja, indo ao encontro das estratégias advindas desde a cúria romana para o Brasil republicano. O estudo analisa, ainda, o papel dos internúncios e núncios na expansão das estruturas eclesiásticas, estabelecendo uma rede de diálogos com os políticos locais e a cúria romana, e realizando adaptações e ajustes nas demandas vindas de Roma para a criação de dioceses. O caso alagoano, analisado numa perspectiva advinda da história política e social, demonstrou que interesses religiosos, políticos, econômicos, culturais e sociais convergiram para a expansão da Igreja na nova fase republicana brasileira.

The investigation of the ecclesiastical structuring process in Alagoas, since the analysis of the documents preserved, mainly, in the Vatican archives, allows the understanding of several aspects related to the development of the Catholic Church in Brazil, after the proclamation of the Republic (1889). Events in the ecclesiastical sphere, such as the creation of bishoprics and archbishoprics, notwithstanding the Separation Act of 1890, were closely aligned with political disputes and the interests of governors, senators and deputies. The creation of the bishopric of Alagoas (1900) and the elevation of the bishopric to the archbishopric of Maceió (1920) were initiated by local political governors, as demonstrated by the requests that reached the apostolic nunciature, and financed with public resources; thus demonstrating that the principle of laicity, a fundamental element of the republican state, had not yet been fully implemented in Alagoas. The evolution of ecclesiastical structures was, at the same time, a project of the State and the Church, meeting the strategies that came from the Roman curia to republican Brazil. The study also analyzes the role of internuncios and nuncios in the expansion of ecclesiastical structures, establishing a network with local politicians and the Roman curia, and making adaptations and adjustments in the demands coming from Rome for the creation of dioceses. The case study of Alagoas, analyzed from a perspective derived from political and social history, demonstrated that religious, political, economic, cultural and social interests converged towards the expansion of the Church in the new Brazilian republican phase.
