Bone and soft tissue sarcomas are a group of rare tumours that affect individuals across different age groups and in recent years we have witnessed major treatment developments due to technological progress, from radical amputations, through chemotherapy and targeted combinations of therapies, conservative surgeries and / or radiotherapy, obtaining better survival rates and progression-free survival. Patients treated at the Orthopedics Oncology service at the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra are followed by one of the referral units for these tumours at national and international levels. Our objectives were to assess patients’ satisfaction, in the context of ambulatory care (these are patients who undergo short-term treatments without the need for an overnight stay) with the care currently provided and their expectations regarding a hypothetical scenario with a Day Hospital, implemented in its own space. The study, with the application of a questionnaire and semi-structured interview in a sample composed of 13 valid responses, revealed a reasonable overall satisfaction, with some dimensions, though reflecting a lower satisfaction, in particular conditions of the waiting room, food and access to information, and the participants presented suggestions of what they expected in the creation of the Day Hospital. A cost assessment of several possible scenarios was carried out, presenting an alternative to the existing one, which was in accordance with the recommendations written by the tutelage, with the restructuring of hospitalization and occupation of a room that would function as a Day Hospital, with operation compatible with the needs of the service.
