The demand for fresh water is increasing steadily with the world’s growing population. Solar desalination, which only uses renewable energy, is a promising approach to the production of water with minimal environmental impact. Solar energy is the Earth's biggest resource and its potential is much larger than the annual energy consumption. In this work, a theoretical study of a solar desalination system with a flat plate solar collector is presented. The distiller consists of a plastic basin with glass wool insulation and painted black in order to increase the absorption of solar energy. At the bottom of the still basin, there’s a copper serpentine heat exchanger also painted black and submerged in salt water, connected by a copper pipe to a flat plate solar collector, through which runs thermal fluid (water) in forced flow. With the aid of mathematical modeling, thermal balances and temperature, solar irradiation and wind speed data, predictions were obtained in relation to the performance of the system during a day in May and another in July. The results show that the productivity at the end of each day with and without the solar collector is, respectively, 10,65kg and 4,44 kg in July and 5,24 kg and 2,28 kg in May.It was concluded that the still output increases with the solar irradiation for a given ambient temperature and that the bigger the difference between the water temperature and the glass temperature, the higher the output of distilled water. The addition of the solar collector provides an average increase in productivity of 134 %.
