The Portuguese territory is rich in molinogical patrimony which lacks recognisement and therefore, valorisation and preservation. The water mills might prove to be a sustainable development factor, due to both their patrimonial worth, as well as identifiable mark. Thus, this dissertation aims to reflect the potential of the renovation of water mills, and requalification of the riverside landscape of river Lis, in the peri-urban area of Leiria, in the village of Cortes. The recognisement that the patrimony in Leiria has led to a research regarding the history and evolution of the site in which justifies the number and variety of milling facilities along the Lis, but also its abandonment. In order to comprehend the current situation and importance attributed to mills, a socioeconomical analysis of the village, as well as of the municipal strategy exposed in the urban planning tools, has been conducted. Finally, in order to truly understand what is left of this patrimony, an in situ analysis has been performed which regards the water mills, as well as the mapping through analysis reports of each building, to be able to comprehend their value and potential. Following the diagnostic, a strategy of revitalisation and divulging of this preindustrial patrimony of the city of Leiria was draft, through the creation of the “Rota dos moinhos do Lis”, composed of an action with three axes. One of environmental preoccupation, another of patrimonial reutilization, and another of cultural divulgation. Furthermore, a cycling course alongside the riverside is here proposed, as well as a set of rehabilitation actions of the water mills, and a plan of divulgation based on current marketing tools, which will aim to popularise the cultural patrimony, thus contributing to a more positive quality of life of those who live in the region, as well as visitors.eng
