António Macieira (1875-1918): Do ideário republicano no jornal Vanguarda à reedição de O Tempo

Abstract

Com o presente trabalho de investigação, no âmbito do curso de Mestrado em Jornalismo e Comunicação da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, pretendemos analisar, de maneira breve, o jornalismo político e a intervenção jurídica e governativa de António Macieira (1875-1918), privilegiando as liberdades de imprensa e de expressão. A este respeito, escudamo-nos em Júlia Leitão de Barros, a qual alega que a historiografia política que recai sobre a crise da monarquia liberal tende a valorizar o papel da imprensa, mas esta nunca foi objecto de um estudo autónomo. Entre outras questões propostas, destacamos as seguintes: Qual o lugar ocupado pela imprensa e pela participação de António Macieira no conjunto das instituições políticas vocacionadas para o debate? Como se processa e modela o debate político jornalístico, em que também intervém António Macieira? Há espaço para a informação no debate jornalístico e político?O nosso trabalho académico, embora não tenha intenções necessariamente biográficas, visa ir mais longe na captação psicológica de um dos fundadores da República, estudando, nas suas formas de pensamento e de acção, a conduta e a maneira de ser desse homem marcadamente ligado à causa republicana e aos jornais. O presente trabalho académico não incide na lógica subjacente ao jornalismo político dos jornais ditos informativos. Ao observar o percurso de um advogado e político com múltiplas incursões no território da imprensa, como sucedeu com António Macieira, este estudo visa ajudar-nos a perceber, entre outras possibilidades, o lugar ocupado pela informação dos jornais de opinião numa época tão marcante para os portugueses.

With the present research work, within the scope of the Master's degree in Journalism and Communication at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, we intend to briefly analyze political journalism and the legal and government intervention of António Macieira (1875 -1918), privileging the freedoms of the press and expression. In this regard, we look at in Júlia Leitão de Barros, who claims that the political historiography that focuses on the crisis of the liberal monarchy tends to value the role of the press. However, the press has never been the subject of an autonomous study. Among other questions proposed, we highlight the following: What is the place occupied by the press and by the participation of António Macieira in the group of political institutions dedicated to the debate? How is the journalistic political debate processed and shaped, in which António Macieira also intervenes? Is there place for information in the journalistic and political debate?Our academic work, although not necessarily biographical, intends to go further in the psychological capture of one of the founders of the Republic, studying the conduct and the way of being of this man strongly connected to the republican cause and the newspapers.This work does not focus on the logic underlying the political journalism of so-called informative newspapers. By observing the trajectory of a lawyer and politician with multiple incursions in the world of press, as happened with António Macieira, this study aims to understand, among other possibilities, the place occupied by the information of the opinion newspapers at a time so remarkable to the Portuguese people.
