A Casa de Cantaber em Conímbriga: Estudo do Espólio das Campanhas de Escavação de 1979-1998

Abstract

A Casa de Cantaber é conhecida desde o início das primeiras escavações em Conímbriga nos finais do séc. XIX, tendo sido alvo de intervenções realizadas de forma intermitente ao longo de todo o século XX. O presente relatório visa apresentar o estudo dos materiais da Casa de Cantaber resultantes das escavações realizadas entre 1979 a 1990 por Salete da Ponte e, entre 1995 a 1998, por Virgílio H. Correia. Este estudo pretende promover uma releitura destas intervenções, e refinar ou ajustar as interpretações existentes sobre os dados arquitetónicos e cronológicos já apresentados por Virgílio H. Correia (2001). O material apresentado neste estudo, tem no seu conjunto uma grande amplitude cronológica que vai desde o período calcolítico à época medieval, mas com maior incidência entre o séc. I d.C. e o séc. V d.C. Na sua maioria é composto por cerâmica comum local e regional, que corresponde a 66.5% do conjunto analisado (537 frag.). Para além destas mas em menor quantidade, destaca-se um conjunto variado de outras categorias cerâmicas composto por: fragmentos de Terra Sigillata (61), ânforas (20), lucernas (13), cerâmica comum de importação (11), cerâmica de paredes finas (8), cerâmica pintada (6) e cerâmica de engobe branco (5). Contam-se ainda alguns pesos de tear, os fragmentos cerâmicos de imitação de Terra Sigillata Africana Clara, os fragmentos de cerâmica orientalizante, os de cerâmicas de Vermelho Pompeiano, os de cerâmica de imitação de Vermelho Pompeiano e de cerâmica de imitação de paredes finas. Compreende, por fim, uma coleção considerável de fragmentos de vidro (101) e de fragmentos metálicos (31). O estudo destes materiais, até aqui inéditos, permitiu corroborar alguns dos dados anteriormente avançados e contribuir com novas informações relevantes para a análise da evolução arquitetónica da casa, confirmando a pré-existência de uma estrutura habitacional mais primitiva e a construção da casa áulica em época flaviana. A datação antoniniana dos mosaicos já apresentada por Virgílio H. Correia foi confirmada pelos materiais exumados nos níveis de construção de alguns destes compartimentos tal como a ocorrência de alguns restauros. A casa de Cantaber é finalmente abandonada e descaracterizada aquando da ocupação sueva.

The Cantaber’s House is known since the first excavations in Conímbriga, which happened by the end of the XIX century. It was intermittently subjected to many interventions throughout the XX century. This report aims to present the study of the Cantaber’s House materials, which are a result of the excavations carried out between 1979 and 1990 by Salete da Ponte and, between 1995 and 1998, by Virgílio H. Correia. This study intends to promote a reinterpretation of these interventions, and to refine or adjust the existing interpretations on the architectural and chronological data already presented by Virgílio H. Correia (2001).The materials presented in this study, as a whole, have a great chronological range that goes from the Chalcolithic period to the medieval era, but with a greater incidence between the I and the V century A.D. These objects are mostly composed of local and regional common ceramics, which corresponds to 66.5% of the analyzed set (537 frag.). In addition to these, but in lesser quantity, a varied set of other ceramic categories stands out: fragments of Terra Sigillata (61), amphorae (20), lucernae (13), common imported ceramics (11), thin-walled ceramics (8), painted ceramic (6) and white engobe ceramic (5). There are also some loom weights, some imitation of ceramic fragments from African Terra Sigillata, orientalizing ceramic fragments, Pompeian Red ceramics, imitation ceramics from Pompeian Red and thin-walled imitation ceramics. Finally, it comprises a considerable collection of glass fragments (101) and metal fragments (31).The study of these unprecedented materials allowed to corroborate some of the previously advanced data, as well as contribute with new and relevant information for the analysis of the architectural evolution of the house, confirming the pre-existence of a more primitive housing structure, as well as the fact that the construction of the aulic house happened in the flavian era. The Antoninian dating of the mosaics, already presented by Virgílio H. Correia, was confirmed by the materials exhumed in the construction levels of some of these compartments as well as the occurrence of some restorations. Cantaber's house is finally abandoned and uncharacterized during the Suebi occupation.
