The phenomenon of the Apparitions marked the future of the Cova da Iria, which is visited annually by millions of believers, thus constituting itself as the main pilgrimage destination in the country and one of the largest Marian shrines in the world. In 1917 pilgrimages to Fatima began and, from that year, countless numbers of faithful visit the enclosure. This dissertation appears in this context, in an attempt to carry out a social analysis of the first pilgrims from Fátima and their practices, from the twenties to the forties.Presenting a proposed analysis, several questions can be asked: Who were the pilgrims from Cova da Iria? Where and from where did they travel? What means of transport did they use? Would there be any kind of organization protected by ecclesiastical characteristics in the places of origin? How were pilgrims received by neighbouring families? What logistical means were available at Cova da Iria to accommodate them? What are the religious practices carried out on the 13th? What was the importance of the miracle cures that took place there? Who were the miraculous? And, finally, we will try to understand the motivations that went to Fátima in the first decades of the sanctuary's history. To this end, they will be used as sources of the journals A Guarda, O Mensageiro, o Voz de Fátima, o Boletim da Diocese de Lamego e o Voz de Lamego, in the years 1923-1925; 1933-1935; and 1943-1945. In addition, about the 1920s, the Documentação Crítica de Fátima (Critical Documentation of Fatima) and also the Manual do Peregrino da Fátima (Pilgrim's Manual of Fatima) in the years 1926,1928,1931,1935 and 1940) will be analysed.
