Outras Formas de Ser Juliana: Estudo de Caso na Adaptação da Personagem Queirosiana para o Ecrã

Abstract

Com a presente dissertação propomo-nos analisar a adaptação da personagem Juliana Couceiro Tavira [O Primo Basílio (1878), de Eça de Queirós] para filme e série de ficção. Além de a obra queirosiana se centrar nas personagens, Juliana é uma personagem sem igual que precipita o desfecho da história e é, em parte, responsável por veicular a mensagem da obra. Como suporte ao estudo de caso, começamos por fazer um enquadramento teórico sobre o estudo da personagem e sobre a adaptação da narrativa ao ecrã. Compreendemos que a personagem pertence ao mundo da ficção e, em função da figuração ficcional, pode migrar entre narrativas. Além disso, os pontos de indeterminação que existem no texto literário permitem imaginar novas configurações e caminhos para a personagem. São, assim, um espaço convidativo à criatividade e à vontade de adaptar. No entanto, tendo em conta que a questão da fidelidade tem marcado os estudos intermediáticos, defendemos que é fundamental observar criticamente cada obra de adaptação pelas suas características intrínsecas. A fidelidade é apenas um ângulo de análise possível. Perante a impossibilidade de estudar em detalhe as várias adaptações disponíveis – sete adaptações realizadas entre 1922 e 2007, das quais duas são seriados e cinco são filmes de ficção – optámos por analisar as duas mais recentes, ambas realizadas por Daniel Filho. Observamos, assim, estas Julianas em comparação com o registo literário e, posteriormente, entre si. Procuramos entender quais os dispositivos usados ao adaptar, como se aproximam ou distanciam, que efeitos trazem para a narrativa e para a sobrevida de Juliana. Apesar de existirem já várias adaptações de Juliana, não cremos que existam derivas criativas que procurem expandir ou levar esta personagem para outros contextos possíveis. Ainda assim, todas as adaptações trazem elementos para a discussão sobre quem é Juliana, contribuindo para a sua sobrevida e consequente permanência na memória coletiva.

On this dissertation, we will analyse the adaptation of the character Juliana Couceiro Tavira [O Primo Basílio (1878), by Eça de Queirós] to film and fiction series. Much of Eça de Queirós’ work revolves around its characters, and Juliana is a unique character in the sense that not only does it contribute to the outcome of the story but is, in fact, responsible for conveying the main message of the narrative. To support our case study, we start with a theoretical background on the study of characters and adaptation of narrative to the screen, where we understand that a character belongs to the fiction world and, due to the fictional figuration, it can migrate between narratives. Furthermore, the textual indetermination allows us to imagine new configurations and pathways for a character. However, taking into account that questions around fidelity have marked adaptation studies, we argue that it is of paramount importance to critically observe each work for its intrinsic characteristics. After all, fidelity is only one angle of analysis. Given the impossibility of studying in detail the various adaptations available – seven adaptations made between 1922 and 2007, two of which are serials and five are fictional films – we choose to analyse the two most recent, both made by Daniel Filho. We take a look at both Julianas and compare them to the literary character and then compare them to one another. We try to understand which devices were used to adapt each Juliana, what brings them closer or apart, as well as the effects they have on the narrative and on the character’s life beyond the book. Notwithstanding that there are several adaptations of Juliana available, we believe that a more creative approach, one that expands or experiments with other contexts is yet to be made. Nevertheless, each and every adaptation brings new elements to the discussion of who is, in fact, Juliana. Each and every adaptation contributes to her life beyond the book and, consequently, to its permanence in our collective memory.
