Forais Manuelinos do Distrito de Coimbra: Contributo para o Estudo da Alimentação

Abstract

A alimentação teve, tem e sempre terá um papel predominante na história das sociedades.Estudar os hábitos alimentares de uma época é, simultaneamente, analisar a vida das populações nos seus múltiplos aspetos: religiosos, económicos, antropológicos, sociológicos, entre tantos outros.Estudamos alguns forais quinhentistas do distrito de Coimbra, a fim de dar a conhecer o contributo que uma fonte de natureza administrativa pode conter para a história da alimentação no século XVI.Na verdade, os forais de D. Manuel I tiveram como principal objetivo atualizar as taxas de produtos alimentares e mercadorias que entravam nas cidades e nas vilas do Reino de Portugal.Mais concretamente analisámos os forais da Lousã e Penacova (1513), de Serpins e de Tábua (1514), de Coimbra e de Montemor-o-Velho (1516). Não podemos deixar de sublinhar a beleza paleográfica e codicológica da maior parte deles, todos em pergaminho e escritos em língua portuguesa, encadernados com tábuas revestidas a couro. Foi preocupação nossa os alimentos que entravam nos respetivos lugares e as taxas que sobre eles recaiam, através destas compreendemos a importância de cada alimento.Assim, atendemos aos cereais, aos ovos, leite e derivados, hortaliças, fruta, peixes, carnes, caças, vinho, azeite, mel e especiarias, procurando encontrar aspetos comuns e outros específicos deste ou daquele território. Sendo eu nascida e criada em Coimbra, a escolha do distrito parece-nos óbvia, não só pela familiaridade com os produtos alimentares da região, mas também pela variedade e qualidade que o próprio território nos oferece, do rio ao mar, do campo à cidade.

The food had, has and will always have a predominant role in the history of societies.Study the eating habits of a time is also examining the lives of people in its multiple aspects: religious, economic, anthropological, sociological among many others. Here we will study some of sixteenth-century forays, to we get to know better the contribution that a source of an administrative nature may contain for the history of food in the sixteenth century. In fact, the forays of D. Manuel had as main objective to update the rates of food products and goods that entered the towns and cities of the Kingdom of Portugal. More specifically we analyzed the forays of Lousã and Penacova (1513), Serpins and Tábua (1514), Coimbra and of Montemor-o-Velho (1516). Not forgetting to emphasize the paleographic beauty of most of them, all in parchment, and written in Portuguese language, leather-bound boards, we were concerned with the food entering the respective places and the rates that fell upon them. So, we attended to cereals, eggs, milk and their derivatives, vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, hunting meat, wine, olive oil, honey and spices, trying to find commons aspects and others specify, of this or that territory. Being born and raised in Coimbra, the district`s choice seems obvious, not only because of its familiarity with the region`s food products, but also for the variety and quality that the territory itself offers us, from the river to the sea, from the countryside to the city.
