Relatório de Estágio e Monografia intitulada"Doença de Alzheimer: Contexto Atual e o Papel do Farmacêutico"

Abstract

O presente documento, redigido no âmbito do “Estágio Curricular” do Mestrado Integrado em Ciências Farmacêuticas da Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Coimbra, consiste em dois relatórios de estágio e uma monografia intitulada “Doença de Alzheimer: Contexto Atual e o Papel do Farmacêutico”. No que respeita aos relatórios de estágio, estes seguem uma estrutura de análise SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats), incidindo sobre os estágios realizados na Direção de Avaliação de Medicamentos da Autoridade Nacional do Medicamento e Produtos de Saúde, I. P. (INFARMED, I.P.) e em farmácia comunitária, na Farmácia Nazareth. A Doença de Alzheimer (DA), descrita pela primeira vez em 1901, constitui, ainda hoje, uma área de investigação extremamente relevante e atual. Tal acontece porque, apesar da investigação que tem vindo a ser desenvolvida há várias décadas, a DA ainda não tem cura e a sua etiologia e explicação mecanística permanecem por esclarecer. Esta doença neurodegenerativa, caracterizada pela formação de agregados da proteína β-amilóide (placas senis) e de tranças neurofibrilares constituídas por proteína tau agregada, afeta uma grande parte da população mundial envelhecida sendo, por isso, crucial responder às questões que sobre ela permanecem. Neste documento são revistos alguns assuntos pertinentes associados à doença de Alzheimer, nomeadamente mecanismos fisiopatológicos de neurodegeneração, fatores de risco e diagnóstico, bem como a terapêutica existente e possíveis futuros avanços nesta área. O papel fundamental do farmacêutico nesta patologia é também abordado.

This document, written within the "Curricular Internship" of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Science of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra, consists of two internship reports and a monograph entitled "Alzheimer's Disease: Current Context and the Pharmacist's Role". The internship reports follow a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses,Opportunities and Threats) analysis structure, focosing on the internships carried out in the Directorate of Medicines Evaluation of the National Authority of Medicines and Health Products, I. P. (INFARMED, I. P.) and in community pharmacy, at Nazareth Pharmacy. Alzheimer's Disease (AD), first described in 1901, is still an extremely relevant and current area of research. This happens because, despite the research that has been developed for several decades, AD still has no cure and its etiology and mechanistic explanation remainunclear. This neurodegenerative disease, characterized by the formation of β-amyloid protein aggregates (senile plaques) and neurofibrillary tangles consisting of aggregated tau protein,affects a large part of the world's aging population, therefore it is crucial to answer the unresolved questions that remain.This document reviews some pertinent issues associated with Alzheimer's disease,namely pathophysiological mechanisms of neurodegeneration, risk factors and diagnosis, as well as the existing therapy and possible future advances in this area. The fundamental role ofthe pharmacist in this pathology is also addressed.
