Abstract: It was after World War II that the term "adaptogen" was formalized, as well as the concept that these substances can increase the state of non-specific resistance, in addition to maintaining homeostasis and being harmless. The protection against stress, conferred by these plant drugs, will be related to several mechanisms of action associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and sympathetic-adrenal axis, involving several mediators, such as chaperone molecules (namely HSP70), kinase Jun N-terminal (JNK), transcription factor forkhead box O, cortisol and nitric oxide. Thus, at the molecular level, studies indicate that adaptogens increase HSP70 expression and decrease JNK. In terms of active constituents, they can be divided into two groups: triterpenoids and phenolic compounds. This work discusses some plant medicines, namely Rhodiola rosea (root), Withania somnifera (root), Panax ginseng (root) and Eleutherococcus senticosus (root), to which adaptogenic properties are attributed. Several studies have been conducted around these plants and their compounds, as well as their potential applications. In this way, numerous benefits are attributed to them, although the main one is protection and increased resistance in stress conditions, some of which have been validated by the European Medicines Agency. In addition to these, there are also immunostimulants, which favour the function and efficiency of the immune system, in a way that is not dependent on antigen, meaning without the necessity of presenting an infectious agent. Echinacea purpurea, Panax ginseng and Astragalus membranaceus are examples of plants from which preparations are obtained with this activity. Many of these plant drugs are available on the market in the form of food supplements, making it essential for the pharmacist to act, since despite all the benefits, these compounds are not risk-free.
