The document presented here, was created within the scope of the curricular unit “Estágio Curricular”, included in the study plan of Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. It presents in the form of a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis, the internship report in community pharmacy accomplished in Farmácia Machado, as well the monography titled “Drug Delivery in the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis”. Atopic Dermatitis (DA) is a chronic, non-contagious, exudative disorder, characterized by eczema, which affects about 20% of children worldwide. This represents a complex and multifactorial disease, due to an impairment of the skin barrier. The drugs currently available on the market for the treatment of this pathology, have a low bioavailability on the skin and may be related to the appearance of several adverse effects. Nanotechnology through the transdermal route offers unprecedented solutions for this type of complications, by creating novel drug delivery systems based on nanoparticles (NP). These can make it possible to obtain better bioavailability and a better direction of the drug to the inflammation site. Significant improvements in clinical symptoms and immune responses are observed, with fewer adverse effects and better safety profiles reported. This review pretends to discuss the conventional treatment of DA, as well as the new therapeutically approaches created by nanotechnology.
