Street Art & Arte Urbana Transformações na paisagem do Centro Histórico de Leiria

Abstract

This dissertation, at its core, aims to study relations. Between public space and its apropriation, art and city making, and, central to this work, between architecture and STREET ART. The main intention is to explore the hypothesis that Street Art practices generate transformations in urban public space. Specifically, the objective is to understand one specific landscape and its transformations, the Historical Center of Leiria. Through this case study we will try to illustrate how a certain artistic culture transforms the social and cultural space of the city.Art is present throughout various urban processes, making it important to comprehend the dynamics, relationships and conflicts caused by artistic productions in their interaction with the landscape.Presently Street Art in the Historical Center of Leiria does not only depart from individual artistic initiative, but also from a growing patron role assumed by key cultural agents and local political power. The underlying hypothesis of this investigation is that transformations creates street art and produce intense relationships between an urban landscape, its life, art and the artist. This work’s goal is to understand how and to what ends.In this sense, we will approach the work from critical theories of space, namely framing spatial production as a social production, and from the author’s concrete in loco experience of the case study. More than conclusions, this works aims to provide a critical discussion regarding how this artistic practice acts culturally and socially in the urban landscape, namely by understanding its action Leiria’s Historical Center.

Esta dissertação, na sua base, pretende estudar relações. Entre espaço público e apropriação, arte e fazer cidade, e central para este trabalho, entre arquitetura e Street Art. O intuito no estudo destas relações é explorar a hipótese das instalações de Street Art conseguirem despontar a transformação do espaço público urbano. Especificamente, o objetivo é compreender uma paisagem urbana em concreto e suas transformações recentes, o Centro Histórico de Leiria. Procuraremos através deste caso de estudo ilustrar o modo como determinada cultura artística transforma o espaço social e cultural da urbe.A arte está presente nas relações da cidade, sendo importante compreender as dinâmicas, relações e conflitos que as produções artísticas transpõem a esta paisagem. Atualmente, a produção de Street Art no Centro Histórico de Leiria não se desenvolve apenas por iniciativa individual de artistas. Existe uma crescente produção pensada por agentes culturais e pelo poder político municipal. A hipótese subjacente a esta investigação é a de que as transformações produzidas pela arte de rua criam relações intensas entre a paisagem urbana, a sua vivência, a arte e o artista. O intuito deste trabalho é compreender como e para que fins.Neste sentido, abordaremos o tema a partir de teorias críticas do espaço, nomeadamente focando-nos na análise do espaço enquanto produção social, e a partir das experiências in loco da autora desta dissertação. Mais que conclusões, pretende-se aqui gerar uma discussão crítica sobre como esta forma de produção artística atua social e culturalmente nas cidades, nomeadamente compreendendo como atua no Centro Histórico de Leiria.
